@arakkosuperstar In the Kyoshi books IIRC it is supposed to be forbidden to non-royalty, but some criminals manage to learn.

why would iroh need to open a school? this isn’t new. people outside the royal family have always been able to lightningbend. iroh only invented redirection. i’m not sure where this persistent idea that only the royal family knew how to do it came from but it was never true.
GENO@genospsychosis

It makes sense cause it’s established Toph was training people and is mostly limited to trained professionals like the police or Suyin’s people. Unless Iroh randomly decided to open up a lightning bending school there’s no reason the discipline became widespread for it to be used

@HCH_Hill What if they just want a subset of the legal privileges of marriage? The current package has some big poison pills.

If you want all the legal privileges of marriage, your objection to 'the institution of marriage' is basically aesthetic and absolutely not worth bending the tax code around.
Paul Lewis@paullewismoney

Couples living in unmarried bliss want the same tax rights as married and civil partnered pairs bit.ly/4ucWB2g at the moment they have no rights - none. So the best tax advice is marry the one you love. Or civil partner them if you hate all the marriage baggage. But…

my criminal law class spent a day on sexual assault. one class prior, the prof warned that the next class may have graphic descriptions of rape, and to see him to be excused w/o consequence. later i overheard a conservative student complaining about trigger warnings
Sami Gold@souljagoyteller

Of all the controversial innovations of Woke 1.0, I don’t get why trigger warnings were so despised. It makes perfect sense why a professor or a YouTube content creator might want to warn in advance of the discussion of topics that might stir up memories of previous traumatic experiences. It makes a lot more sense than standpoint epistemology or microaggressions

@SidewalkBuffalo He's in the military. He will serve. It looks really good for the Army and Navy to show off that their recruits are peak physical condition. Not for him individually, sure, but it makes sense to have navy and army players in the league.

@kilpta47 @ScottStras @CFBHome This guy getting drafted is not going to bring thousands of recruits to enlist. It won’t even cause one to enlist. Because he’s not entering the military he’s going off to play professional sports.

He's a Midshipman not a Cadet. He was representing the Naval Academy in the uniform they wear every day. He will serve his time in the Active Reserves and will assist in recruiting and retention efforts. You couldn't find a better recruiting effort than last night.
Dave & Keri Bassili@happiestporch

I’m about to piss off a lot more people here…look, I get he’s still a Cadet…but his service commitment is fully delayed til his NFL stint is over…this just feels a little performative…really with the uniform? Bro, you owe the Marine Corps 10 years now…🤣😂🤣

@kilpta47 @ScottStras @CFBHome Terrible analogy. Elvis actually served. Made serving in uniform cool. This kid is choosing not to serve. Making football look cool. Not a benefit for the academies or military recruiting.

@SidewalkBuffalo @ScottStras @CFBHome Ehh. Maybe for the majority. But for those in a public facing role, they do great PR. Think about Elvis, for example. Got a cushy reserve job but brought in thousands. Same thing for this kind of guy.

@SidewalkBuffalo @ScottStras @CFBHome We don't let the top aerospace engineers go to SpaceX because we want them to be military engineers. That's why astronauts are all military too.

@ScottStras @CFBHome It’s the exception for athletes that’s annoying. Why not let the top aerospace engineer go work at Space X and serve in the reserves? Or the top-ranked chemist Midshipman? No. They have to do their active duty time because they don’t run or catch a football.

Joe Bartolozzi gets into a debate with his chat about $4,000 not being a life changing amount of money 😳 “4 grand is not life changing money most people can’t even pay off 10% of their student loans” “a life changing amount of money is like $100,000”

@Hezbolsonaro @grain99806254 I think the distance between the operator and the destruction is pretty key here. At least a bomber is seeing the scorched earth beneath them. They’re actually there. The drone cuts out before any blood is spilled.

How is this comparable? Nerve gas is an indiscriminate WMD and landmines are a lasting threat to civilians for generations to come. I don't like seeing these snuff films, but tracking an individual soldier like this seems like one of the most discriminate ways you can wage war.
Yugopnik@yugopnik

The only reason drone warfare isn’t treated like nerve gas or land mines under international law is because it isn’t the West’s sons dying from it. As soon as it’s not Ivans being blown to bits but Johns and Toms the “discussion on the ethics of drone warfare” will become a mainstream talking point.

I always thought the Avatar franchise sort of struggled with its thematic consistency of how it frames the Avatar state considering how Kyoshi and Roku used it to save countless lives. I think the answer lies in the fact the Avatar State is destructive for Aang specifically.
daily aang@aangdaily

The worst writing decision they made in recent stories was reducing the Avatar State to just a power-up. What made it compelling before was how it felt like a terrifying possession overtaking the Avatar’s body, not something you’d pop out after every minor inconvenience

@cowlonfull I know Americans believe that to be true, but it isn't. And also, the us does not really have sports teams, they have franchises. It's inevitable that ones relationship to a glorified McDonald's is different than to teams belonging to communities

Europeans can and do say any number of incorrect things about Americans every day on this website, but “Americans are never real fans of any sports team” is just a bridge too far. I am not going to let you get away with this
𝗙𝗜𝗔𝗚𝗢@fiago7

Never in my life will I understand the concept of changing your team. But I guess Americans are never real fans of any sports team, they are fans of their city and that‘s fair. Just a completely different mentality.

@cole_groth @olutrain 1. No 2. No I care because the whole point of the account is to track data. When you know it's not correct, the account solely becomes a disinformation machine that misinforms you on Zionist spending and action.

@cole_groth @olutrain "To nearly everybody, the point of the tracker is simply to find out who is a Zionist. $1 vs. $10M from the Israeli lobby makes no difference to people who use it." I think you fundamentally don't understand what a tracker is or why having correct data is important.

@olutrain @kilpta47 You didn’t answer my question. To nearly everybody, the point of the tracker is simply to find out who is a Zionist. $1 vs. $10M from the Israeli lobby makes no difference to people who use it. The only people complaining are Zionist concern trolls.

@cole_groth Additionally, they have categorized some organizations as pro-Israel or not Pro-Israel depending on the candidate. This is legitimate sometimes if the organization changes affiliation, but they don't update other numbers, and the categorization is frequently contradictory (3)
