@Glinner I was never even taught what a verb and a noun were. I can write and have a firm grasp of grammar and structuring of sentences, but wouldn't be able to explain any of the above terms. It seems like learning for the sake of learning.

If studying English at school results in a love of reading, then the job is done. Everything else--a firm grasp of grammar, for instance—springs from that. This Gove-style bullshit seems to be designed to make kids stupid.
