I like puzzles, code, chaos and humans, not necessarily in that order. I don't know why the koala.

@oliverburkeman I enjoy not only that World Duty Free a trademark (and not a description of it actually being Duty Free, as this no longer exists), but that also they offer discounts compared to the Average High Street Price... which is another trademark, not the average high street price.

I have a new piece up. It's a bit of a rant, even for me, so buckle in.
A lot of "thought leaders" have been making their mortgages lately off of bits on how AI is going to replace software engineers, particularly entry-level engineers.

It's easy to generate code, but not so easy to generate good code. Contributor @mipsytipsy makes the case for hiring junior developers and treating your engineering team like a delicate ecosystem, and why GenAI tools can only take so devs far. stackoverflow.blog/2024/06/10/gen…

@seifattar The promise of "this library will take care of your problems" remains persuasive
Interestingly, more persuasive when the underlying problem is more difficult (and thus hard for a library to actually solve), and before you know it, bam, Microsoft Dynamics.

@oliverburkeman lesswrong.com/posts/9weLK2AJ… is a classic on this! It's framed as being about political parties, but it extends easily to "my group must react this way".

@IvoGraham enjoyed the show! If you were the one encouraging people to play werewolf/mafia, check out tickets.edfringe.com/whats-on/blood… ? It's like super-werewolf. For nerds.

I’ve been frozen out of my @monzo account for 30 hours now. My first issue with Monzo but it’s a doozy. Our joint acct and both our personal accts are frozen. Scheduled payments being declined. Amazing how much you rely on your bank working. Going on holiday tomorrow. Stressful!

@standupmaths if someone was heading to the Edinburgh Fringe and hasn't made it back to An Evening of Unnecessary Detail in FAR too long, who might you recommend?
I found an advert for you and @MouldS there but sadly I think it was many moons ago :(

@craigjbass Someone shared a codebase with a comment starting with "look, this is weird but..."

@oliverburkeman I think it's difficult to make a strong case in such a short time - I've found this post over at lesswrong (lesswrong.com/posts/LTtNXM9s…) to be a better resource for the "why".
I note it doesn't make me as confident as Yudkowsky about timelines or % doom chance.

@oliverburkeman Optimising for social vitality/clicks leads to some interesting places! Given his "wacky" brand maybe pitching as "normal, boring" is the way to maximise engagement?
