The Kandla–Mundra highway, which serves as the lifeline of the country’s economy and connects two of India’s most important ports, has been paralyzed by a traffic jam lasting over 24 hours. This highway, neglected for years, is now in its worst condition in the last five years. The result has been devastating—accidents, loss of precious human lives, breakdown of thousands of vehicles, and massive fuel wastage that adds further burden on the economy. Despite collecting tolls, the National Highway Department and the toll operating agencies, working hand in glove, have failed to ensure even basic maintenance of this crucial stretch. Such mismanagement of a highway that directly supports India’s exports and foreign exchange earnings is unacceptable.
