@Andric1961 I understand the Commission will propose that new MS’ voting rights could be stripped by QMV.

True. But Hungary was also a loyal EU member in 2010. Then Viktor Orbán came. There is concern that Montenegro, tomorrow or the day after, could also produce an Orbán and then block the EU. This question remains unresolved.

Montenegro is allegedly the “frontrunner” among EU candidate countries. The EU-Commission indicates it could very soon, by 2028 or 2029, become the first new member since Croatia in 2013. But is that realistic? Discussed this with Montenegro’s President Jakov Milatović. ⬇️

To say Viktor Orban was a democrat after all because he admitted defeat is quite a stretch considering he manipulated the entire electoral system to his hand and in the end fell victim to the monster of his own creation. Tisza only got 53% of the popular vote.

EU govts are engaging in election interference in other EU countries‼️ We saw it in Romania already, and it’s wrong on so many levels. Those who want to escalate war with Russia and a militarised EU see Orban as their biggest obstacle, so they want him gone, and don’t care how.

A pro-European right has always existed, it's nothing new. The novelty is the emergence of a dedicated pan-European federalist hard/far right. The development of a right-wing version of pan-europeanism (something that goes much further than merely being pro-EU) is not abnormal per se. Just like you can have a left or liberal interpretation of what a pan-European/federal Europe should be, there's no reason why there would not be a conservative one. The issue (as pointed in the article) is that while these new movements claim to be "conservative" and mostly seek to differentiate themselves from the far-right (by formally rejecting nationalism), at least some of them have developed an internal dissonance/contradiction that actually puts them in the far-right family, the Ave Europa civil war being the prime example. While having critical views of immigration is not problematic in principle, these movements approach it in a manner that is more reminiscent of the far-right than conservatives. Conservative usually link uncontrolled migration to pressure on the social model, insecurity, etc. These movements use these arguments as well BUT also justify their opposition to immigration with outright ethnic or culturo-religious argument, an absolute dog-whistle for far-right identitarian supremacist. One just need to look at the answers from their supporters to any tweet questioning these movements to immediately see that discourse popping up, focused on a paranoïa that European ethnic groups will go extinct (the good old far-right Great Replacement narrative). Their argument to deny their belonging to the far-right family is exclusively limited to "we're pro-EU and not pro-Russian" which, while indeed excluding parts of the traditional far-right, puts aside their whole identitarian discourse that is deeply far-right in nature. If we link this to current EU politics, this shows the weakness in the new EPP motto that defines the far-right exclusively as being anti-EU, pro-Russian and anti-rule of law, leaving the door open for this emerging branch of the far-right (though one could discuss whether they would ACTUALLY be compatible with the rule of law). It suits the short-term political objectives of the EPP to weaken the left, but also lets the far-right fox in the henhouse. Bottom-line is that these emerging pan-European groups are far-right and not conservative in nature. Again, this is not abnormal per se, but they mislabel themselves to feed their growth and attempt to gain legitimacy/acceptability. What makes them interesting, is that they signal the reinforcement of the "civilisational" far-right wing, partly in reaction to the war in Ukraine and the return of Trump. Contrary to the nationalist wing of the far-right (which is arguably still the majority), they don't see Europe as anathema but as a geopolitical, societal and identitarian necessity to defend European ethnic groups against external threats, be it Russia, muslims, non-European ethnic groups or the US. The identitarian and somewhat supremacist DNA of the far-right remains, but its focus is the "European civilisation" more than the nation-state. The million dollar questions are 1) whether this branch of the far-right will become dominant/mainstream within the far-right family or whether it will fracture and go its own way and 2) what role they will play in the on-going debate about the union of the rights.

A pro-European right is fast emerging in Brussels. Young conservatives — pro-Europe, anti-immigration and with a strong civilizational view — are trying to reshape Europe from within. Groups such as @CharlemagneClub and @AveEuropae embody this fast moving trend. Could this be the future of the European right? A group of young conservatives in Brussels told me they's seeing more and more young me throughout Europe who feel “politically homeless.” Why? Too pro-Europe for right-wing nationalists. Too right-wing for the pro-EU mainstream. Super important trend to watch! Groups like @AveEuropae and @CharlemagneClub key here, as well as accounts like @euromaximal @NXT4EU
