@metsbatflip1 Of all the things that are a concern with the NY Mets retiring Gary Carter #8 is on page 745 maybe the one thing the Wilpon’s got right was not retiring numbers

According to Anthony Dicomo in his latest newsletter: People familiar with the situation said the Mets’ committee voted last year on whether to retire Gary Carter’s No. 8 as part of the organization’s relaxed standards for number retirements. Carter, who entered the Hall of Fame as an Expo, was voted down largely because he spent only five of his 19 MLB seasons with the Mets. There was never a vote to unfreeze No. 8, but due to either a miscommunication or mistake, the number ended up in Nick Morabito’s locker.

Billions for migrant hotels & sanctuary city perks… but the drains still can’t handle a summer rain. This is what ‘progressive’ priorities look like, NYC 💀🌊 Keep voting blue tho, I’m sure the next tax hike will fix it.

45 years ago today, Yale's Ron Darling & St. John's Frank Viola matched up in the greatest college pitching duel ever. Both starters made it through 11 scoreless innings. Darling didn't allow a hit until the 12th inning but St. Johns won 1-0.

2 years ago the WNBA had its first bona fide box office star in Caitlin Clark. Her team, the Indiana Fever, had to move its games into massive venues, and charge hundreds of dollars for tickets in response to demand to see her play. Even today, out of jersey sales for ALL basketball players, hers are second only to NBA star Steph Curry...meaning she sells even more jerseys than guys like Lebron James. But with the hype came extra scrutiny on a league that was clearly unprepared for the big time, and more interested in identity politics than in growth. Before, the story was about a generational talent. Now it's becoming about a generational fumble. I've never seen anything like it.

Fever is the dumbest organization out there. After Caitlin Clark seen arguing with asst coach on bench, she is not in line up next game. She had 2 days off and played 23 mins last game. Nobody is buying it .

CBS axes The Late Show with Stephen Colbert tonight — final episode at 11:35 PM ET. Colbert led his timeslot with ~2.5 million viewers… but the show still lost $40 million+ yearly (with Colbert’s salary reportedly ~$15 million). Meanwhile, newer shows like Gutfeld! at 10pm were regularly crushing it with 3 million+ viewers. Late-night economics hitting hard. Smart business by CBS? (Video: AI)

Empty seats at @IndianaFever games? Simple.. At some point the drama get exhausting At some point “the star” must produce championships At some point “the star” pimping every product on every commercial fuels resentment At some point people get tired of bad hoops We may be at that point

The story of the Fever and Caitlin Clark is simple. She is more than a basketball player. She is an entertainer. People pay to see her like she’s the star of a Broadway show or it’s her concert. This means honesty and transparency are crucial, especially with attendance dropping.

Wow — what an indictment of our NYC school system that nearly half of students are not proficient in basic math and reading, despite spending roughly $42,000 per student. NYC has many great teachers, but too often they’re buried under bad curriculum decisions, ideological distractions, and endless administrative bureaucracy instead of being empowered to actually teach kids the fundamentals. @NYCMayor @NYCCouncil @NYCDOE_Teachers

Jeff Bezos on NYC spending: "If we ran Amazon the way New York City runs their school system, packages would take 6 weeks to arrive, we would charge you a $100 delivery fee and when the package did finally arrive, it would have the wrong item in it."

I wore #8 for the Mets in 1992-93. When we went to Montreal to play the Expos I dug into the batters box my first AB. I heard a voice say “wear it with pride David”. It was Gary Carter from his squat. I had no idea what he meant until Sid Fernandez alerted me he wore #8😎
Howie Rose@HowieRose

It appears that most fans are opposed to the Mets releasing #8 (to call up Nick Morabito) after having not issued it for 25 years. There’s been a debate over whether Gary Carter’s number should be retired, but to release it this 40th anniversary season of 1986 just seems wrong.

Jim Dolan's Madison Square Garden continues to ban lawyers they don't like. The latest: an attorney who represents a NYPD cop. The cop was working off-duty at MSG, got involved in an altercation, and was (allegedly) hospitalized for spinal injuries. He's now banned.
