I don’t think there’s a single fight in Superman ‘25 that has any of the emotional weight you’re talking about.
Even the whole “brains vs brawn” thing is hollow bc the whole apotheosis is completely separate from the thematic/emotional premise of the movie. It’s also just ugly.

Here’s the problem with Man of Steel though: The movie takes itself way too seriously for a Superman story that it forgot to actually give the character and his world much personality, warmth, or charm. Yeah, the punches looked “heavy,” but emotional weight and visual impact aren’t the same thing. A fight can have shockwaves and still feel emotionally empty. And camera movement really doesn’t matter when you’re not emotionally invested in what’s actually happening on screen

The best the Sixers could give the Knicks… without their best player healthy on the floor? Comical. Keep in mind the Knicks played bad for most of the game & only won because the Sixers went ice cold in the 4th quarter missing wide open shots.

@Darren_Mooney Right, if deconstructions are well-done, they should be in conversation with what came before and, dare I say, enhance those pieces.
The original question somewhat reminds me of the WALK HARD/music biopic conversation.

This would be an insane argument to make about movies. “You shouldn’t watch ‘The Godfather’ as your first gangster film or ‘The Good, the Bad and the Ugly’ as your first western.”
You absolutely should, and when you’re done with them, there’s decades of stuff to continue with.

Here’s the thing.
Comics and anime (and most media forms) should be constantly pushing forward, in terms of quality, formal language and thematic substance.
You should not be pick up a piece of media from 20-40 years ago and find it lightyears ahead of the best modern stuff.

Re-watching Jerry Maguire in the theatre recently made me long for films with out all the "clever" spins on old tales. Just gimme the old tales, but make the good.

NBC also notes that Paul Rivera, who Martin chose to lead the review, was unpaid, which Ken points out. Also: both sources in those pieces could totally be wrong. But that's where those questions came from.

I don’t really agree with this. There’s been great CBMs which critics liked but people didn’t go to them. Thunderbolts immediately come to mind. I don’t believe people have completely given up on the genre but I do think they may just be looking for marquee characters. We’ll see.

Got three:
It reintroduces a lot of Golden Age elements but w/ modern presentation.
It looks AMAZING.
It genuinely cares about the things it’s talking about and engages w/ that material for almost two hours before getting to the big fight stuff most ppl went to go see it for.

@Columned_ It’s a film where Superman seemingly rejects his Kryptonian heritage to fully embrace being a human, which felt really weird and lopsided. It was definitely my least favorite part of the film.

The lighting in basically any outdoor scene is not great, the immigrant allegory is not great, I don't think Gunm put much thought into it because he just made this movie about him being cancelled

You can argue whether that’s good or bad. “Michael” clearly works for audiences, and that is horrendous. But it works.

Honestly, I think it’s probably *more* worthwhile to teach kids (however broadly) that the kinds of people who - to pick a random example - try to present themselves as messiahs deserve to be treated with a healthy amount of skepticism.
