Questioner - I want to know the reason behind things. I try to read a lot and for a living solve problems (sometimes with code)

When it comes down to it there is not one issue more important than this and it’s largely ignored by everyone on all sides

My brother’s son is in 9th grade learning about the Great Depression. He showed me a paragraph from his textbook today… and for a second, I genuinely thought it was about today’s economy. Strange how 100 years pass, yet some things barely change.

A flood of information does not make the truth more accessible. How can we keep sight of the truth when overwhelmed by information? Full conversation with Yumi Tokunaga for @tv_asahi_news available on bit.ly/YNH-TV-ASAHI

@jaredwhomst @Vehera @nocontextmemes I use both versions in Polish. We still use analog clocks so people are familiar with 12h format. But, I would use only 3 PM in English. It’s about saying what the other person is more likely to understand.

I have a 100% trade deficit with the lady that irons my suits. She offers something way more efficiently and at a much better price than I can do myself. And in exchange, I spend the time I would otherwise be wasting on pressing my suits offering financial services at 1,000x the hourly GDP rate as I paid her to afford me this time. Am I getting ripped off by her? Should I start steaming my own suits instead of offering financial services? Would that make me better off? Would I be richer because of it?

Flexport's team was able to reverse engineer the formula the Administration used to generate the "reciprocal tariffs." It's quite simple, they took the trade deficit the US has with each country and divided it by our imports from that country. The chart below shows the predictions of this formula plotted against the actual new tariff rates.

Just figured out where these fake tariff rates come from. They didn't actually calculate tariff rates + non-tariff barriers, as they say they did. Instead, for every country, they just took our trade deficit with that country and divided it by the country's exports to us. So we have a $17.9 billion trade deficit with Indonesia. Its exports to us are $28 billion. $17.9/$28 = 64%, which Trump claims is the tariff rate Indonesia charges us. What extraordinary nonsense this is.
James Surowiecki@JamesSurowiecki

It's also important to understand that the tariff rates that foreign countries are supposedly charging us are just made-up numbers. South Korea, with which we have a trade agreement, is not charging a 50% tariff on U.S. exports. Nor is the EU charging a 39% tariff.
