@agentzog @GrayConnolly Unclear on who made the decision, though doubt it was a rookie. Read a piece arguing the leadership has issues with other faiths, but wouldn't accept that without more (objective) reporting. In the end, too much proven and circumstantial evidence of serious issues with Catholics.

@ProtPhilosopher @EcciusMaximus To claim that these men didn't build and hold their theological positions on Our Lady based on exegesis, unlike that of say, the papacy, either undercuts your particular argument or the whole of protestantism. Or perhaps both.

The issue isn't whether their views matter. It's that holding something as revisable opinion is different from holding it as binding dogma. Their objections to Rome weren't personal opinions. They were exegetical and theological views they treated as binding on the conscience. And they held that because Scripture secured those positions. That's the distinction Knowles's poll collapses.

Many Protestants are calling this poll from Michael Knowles a "trap." Redeemed Zoomer says of the Catholic and early Reformers’ view on the perpetual virginity of Mary, "They're the same." But Knowles's poll is only "a trap" if you grant him the ambiguity in his framing of the prompt. Knowles asks, "do you agree with the Catholic view or with the view of Protestant reformers...?" The ambiguity is that your agreement only focuses on the conclusion reached by those two "views." But agreement with views, and the views themselves, aren't comprised of just whether both camps endorse the perpetual virginity of Mary. They also include the grounds on which those conclusions are held. Luther, Zwingli, and Wesley held perpetual virginity as a personal opinion consistent with their reading of Scripture, not as a dogma binding on conscience. None of the Reformers treated perpetual virginity as the kind of doctrine that requires Tradition and the Magisterium to establish it as an article of faith. The same cannot be said for the Catholic "view." So there's no trap. The conclusions may match. The views don't.
Michael Knowles@michaeljknowles

When it comes to the perpetual virginity of Mary, do you agree with the Catholic view or with the view of Protestant reformers Martin Luther, Ulrich Zwingli, and John Wesley?

@Buccigross Any chance that we'll get to watch each of these games in their entirety on one channel or will we be forced to switch back and forth to accommodate college baseball and softball?

@agentzog @GrayConnolly In this he confirms it was a mistake, even the Israelis now admit it. Here is the official statement. At this time in history with 1 priest killed, parishioners dead, at least 2 churches shelled, it is very difficult to grant grace to the Israeli gov't. lpj.org/en/news/joint-…

@agentzog @GrayConnolly Not sure of your sources, but that's not what's being reported. Widely reported that the restrictions were on gatherings of 50 or more. One can second guess or otherwise guess at motives, but what is clear is that it was a mistake to stop the Cardinal.

@agentzog @GrayConnolly This was not enforced equally. And Netanyahu has since come out and explicitly apologized for this mistake and has guaranteed access.

@SteveDeaceShow Another example of the division sought by our separated brethren, members of churches founded by men rather than Our Lord's Church. Only the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church has the fullness of Holy Scripture and Sacred Tradition and does not rely on private revelation.

Another "but we did this wrong thing before so this time is also fine". Do people even understand for what policies and precedents they're arguing? It was wrong for the gov't to prevent Mass then, its wrong now. @sorianojohnd

Last year Colorado passed SB25-003 into law, banning the purchase of most semi-auto rifles, shotguns, and gas-operated pistols unless you ask the government for a special permission slip first. #coleg #copolitics #2A The law fully goes into effect August 1, 2026. Colorado Parks & Wildlife is building the system to enforce it. Yes, your hunting fees are now funding gun control. CPW is hosting a series of public meetings with the first one being on April 2 at 6pm on Zoom. If you want to understand what’s coming and/or speak up, this is your chance. Yet another game where we set to record the game on @espn channel advertised only to come home and find out the channel was changed. Missed the first five goals. Now had to reset the recording for Mich UMD as the channel guide was wrong. Awful. @NCAAIceHockey @TheNCHC @DIRECTV

@abbythelibb_ "Catholics scream "inexcusable" persecution. The dishonesty in the name of Christianity is shameful." How can a so-called Christian actually make this type of caluminous statement against faithful Christian brothers and sisters, particularly on Palm Sunday?

This is a no-win situation for Israel. If they allow access to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre on days and times during Holy Week that are predictable to Iran, and Iran takes that opportunity to harm beloved Catholic leaders along with the church, it will be a terrible, global tragedy, and the world will viciously blame Israel for it. But if Israel tries to prevent such a tragedy by barring access on such dangerous days, Catholics scream "inexcusable" persecution. The dishonesty in the name of Christianity is shameful.

@gerardtbaker @EWErickson This is not proper. There is no apology here for what was an unjustified denial of the Cardinal's private Mass in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre on Palm Sunday, no less. Even Amb. Huckabee agrees. There is no reason for faithful Christians not to oppose these actions.

A wise and proper effort to de-escalate. No need for further inflammation. Let us hope we can all now focus on observing, in the safest and most solemn way, this sacred week for both religious traditions.
Prime Minister of Israel@IsraeliPM

Today, out of special concern for his safety, Jerusalem police prevented the Latin Patriarch Cardinal Pizzaballa from holding mass this morning at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Again, there was no malicious intent whatsoever, only concern for his safety and that of his party.

I appreciate the Israeli government’s security concerns. I understand that they’ve closed all holy sites. They have no right whatsoever to ban the Latin Patriarch from the Holy Sepulchre on any occasion, much less on Palm Sunday.

I am disappointed with the decision by the Israeli police to prevent the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem and the Christian Communities of the Holy Land from marking Palm Sunday at the Holy Sepulchre.    These actions further violate the longstanding status quo of Jerusalem’s Holy Sites. People of every faith in Jerusalem should be able to worship freely, fully, and without fear. I am pleased that President Herzog has contacted the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, His Beatitude Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, to reaffirm this.

@robbystarbuck @breeadail Perhaps there are details I've missed. Have plenty of disagreement--theological, ecclesiological, and politcal--with Amb. Huckabee, but he seems to also agree that this is a poor decision: x.com/i/status/20382…

Ambassador Mike Huckabee@GovMikeHuckabee

My statement re Prohibiting the Latin Patriarch of entering Church of Holy Sepulcher on Palm Sunday: While all Holy sites in the Old City are closed due to safety concerns for mass gatherings including the Western Wall, Church of the Holy Sepulcher and Al Aqsa Mosque, the action today by the Israel Nat'l Police to deny Latin Patriarch Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa and 3 other priests from entering the Church to offer a blessing on Palm Sunday is an unfortunate overreach already having major repercussions around the world.  Home Front Command Guidelines restrict any gatherings to 50 people or less.  The 4 representatives of the Catholic Church were well below that restriction.  Statements from the Gov't of Israel indicate the action to prohibit Cardinal Pizzaballa entry to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher were for safety reasons, but churches, synagogues, and mosques throughout Jerusalem have met with the restrictions of 50 or less.  For the Patriarch to be barred from entry to the Church on Palm Sunday for a private ceremony is difficult to understand or justify. Israel has indicated it will work with the Patriarch to accommodate a safe means of carrying out Holy Week activities.

My gut reaction when I heard that Israel blocked Cardinal Pizzaballa from the Church of the Holy Sepulchre was that it’s wrong to block him, BUT, I totally understand why they did. Iran would love to kill a man who was almost Pope on Palm Sunday & destroy a holy Christian site. They need to quickly find a way to secure these sites as top priorities so everyone can worship safely but I don’t think Israel should be hit too hard for trying to prevent a terror attack. Both sides (Israel and Pizzaballa) have good reasons for how they feel here.
Collin Rugg@CollinRugg

JUST IN: Israel says they are coming up with a “plan” to allow church leaders to worship at the holy site “in the coming days” after Cardinal Pizzaballa was blocked from entering the Church of the Holy Sepulchre on Palm Sunday. Netanyahu’s office has released the following statement: “Over the past several days, Iran has repeatedly targeted the holy sites of all three monotheistic religions in Jerusalem with ballistic missiles. In one strike, missile fragments crashed meters from the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. As a result, Israel has temporarily asked worshippers from all faiths not to worship at the holy sites in Jerusalem's Old City to protect them. Today, out of special concern for his safety, Jerusalem police prevented the Latin Patriarch Cardinal Pizzaballa from holding mass this morning at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Again, there was no malicious intent whatsoever, only concern for his safety and that of his party. However, given the holiness of the week leading up to Easter for the world's Christians, Israel's security arms are putting together a plan to enable church leaders to worship at the holy site in the coming days.” Video: tzogho / tt.
