@K__Med I still think this is just a thing that affects open world RPGs with a focus on exploration. I felt this way about pretty much all of Bethesda's RPGs and ended up loving them after getting over the slow starts.

Still about 7 hours too long before it gets good and it's not like there's a build up for story purposes or anything to keep the carrot on a stick either.
Wonder if they can do anything to change the onboarding and get you into shit like this, sooner.

Finally got my Bloodborne PC Remaster to version 1.0. No mod is ever perfect but i'm really happy with this one. As a refresher, it brings dynamic shadows for everything, higher res textures, parallax occlusion mapping, better AA, DoF, SSAO, edits lightmaps, new shininess maps

Crimson Desert is SO GOOD. I don’t even know where to start but the exploration, combat and lore hunting has all been very enjoyable.
I’m appreciative of the reckless ambition and abandon that the devs employed when creating this game.
It’s Everything, Everywhere, At Once.

@NikeTechRanger Honestly, this, more than anything else, is tempting me to play Crimson Desert. I love games where the exploration feels meaningful and rewarding.

Earthbound is often only credited for its cultural and stylistic impact but it was also ahead of its time in some other ways. Rolling HP, the fact that it's one giant, connected map with no "overworld", and this. It had this in 1994. It's not all just "quirk chungus RPG"

More RPGs need to add the feature that lets you automatically defeat enemies if you are much higher level than them. It makes exploring so much more fun.

@VanishedOmens @PonyLogos @EnforcerNo0 What's wild about it is it really changes the game... makes it feel like an old game with random encounters and old school menus. It isn't just a graphical change, but a full demake.

Highkey wish more devs would do the 2D & 3D playthrough modes in more #JRPGs like #DragonQuest XI did.
I mean. It takes more time…but it’s such a great feature & gives great replayability to see the adventure in different lights.

@DeeGeeGames2009 Azure Dreams is definitely weird niche jank. Classic roguelike with a bit of town recovery and light dating. And most importantly, Psycho Mantis can detect it on your memory card.

@BringBackBanjoK If that were true I'd have never gotten into any of The Elder Scrolls or Fallout games. Open world RPGs tend to be a slow burn before the addiction sets in.

My coldest take is if your game sucks for its first 8 hours then it sucks period.

@jetjaguar2236 Turn based games (particularly those with random encounters) need fewer repeating battles and more unique ones. There's very little that's satisfying about winning a fight I've won before, so any feature that lets me skip such fights is appreciated.

Much prefer when RPGs don't even allow you to be that overpowered compared to the enemies.

played some more, up to 13 hours now. maybe i'm the worst adventurer of all time, but I haven't had any "wow" moments out in the open world. enemy variety has been guys in red uniform, goblin looking guys standing around, and slightly bigger versions.

@JeanFeliz_ FFXVI was a good game, but it really needed better exploration. Whole game felt like a to-do list including the side quests. There was never really any sense of discovery.

Nope we are NOT doing a revisionism with Final Fantasy XVI when it comes to its side quests. Literally the weakest point of the game, and it is universal known for it. Literally every corner you go that was one of the biggest complaints. Yoshida made themquest like if it was FF14

@0rtaa Really wish this had been released in the west on SNES. I did eventually play it, but by then I was spoiled by more modern game design and it was a bit hard to go back. Now my nostalgia for IV and VI makes V feel like the odd one out.

@K__Med I'm a bit more cynical than that... I just see a lot of selfish people expecting everything to be made for them and shitting on anything that doesn't appeal to them. It's not even about game design. It's about extreme privilege and inflated egos.

So, this conversation is far more nuanced than that.
Basically, video games in the past just weren’t nearly as accessible as they are now.
There’s a big rift of expectations between gamers who started in the 80s/90s and those who started later.
There were very few accessibility options—or even the technological capability to handhold players—back then. Now there are countless options, configurations, and difficulty settings.
Sure, some of it is “git gud” and “it’s not a movie, bro,” but it’s also because games are now built for a much bigger audience and treated more as a business than a passion project.
Appealing to more people to sell more copies plays a big role too.
If everything were as simple as the OP suggests, life would be easy.

Crimson Desert is revealing something about a lot of modern gamers that was also revealed in a way with Starfield. They need their hands held with lots of cinema level cutscenes and scripted events, or else they can't find any fun in certain games.
