This was a total rumble. Earlier today around 4:00 PM, chaos erupted at a service station on Gallatin Pike. Metro Police were flooded with calls about a man acting erratically—roaming through heavy traffic, lying down in the roadway, and cursing at drivers. At one point, witnesses say he even punched a passing vehicle, creating a life-threatening situation for himself and everyone on the road. Officer Rodion Peters, a two-year veteran of the force, arrived on the scene and tried to pull the man to safety before he was hit by a car. That’s when things turned violent. The two went to the ground in a desperate struggle. In a fight this close, the primary fear is always the suspect reaching for the officer's weapon. Thankfully, that didn’t happen. A Good Samaritan nearby saw the struggle and rushed in to assist Officer Peters until backup arrived. The Outcome: Officer Peters was remarkably uninjured. The suspect has been charged with assaulting an officer and disorderly conduct. He is currently being held for a psychological evaluation. It makes you think what other job do you head into every morning knowing this could be your reality? Unless you’re a pro wrestler or a boxer, you don't face this kind of physical danger just for showing up to work. We are incredibly relieved that Officer Peters is safe and heading home tonight. Here’s hoping the suspect gets the professional help he clearly needs.

Mayor Brandon Johnson is facing outrage from Chicago residents over Walgreens store closures, particularly on the South Side. Walgreens is closing its longtime Chatham store on June 4 after $1 million in losses in 2025 and high theft rates. The store had been there more than 20 years. Walgreens said theft at that location was four times the company average. Walgreens spent $400,000 a year on security officers in addition to other measures, but that wasn’t enough. Thieves would break through the defenses and rob the store anyway. Johnson needs to seriously address the crime that’s making businesses leave Chicago. (Video: AI)

@BuzzPatterson Amazing story, Buzz that sounds like a real baptism by fire as a new AC! Was that classified desert base Prince Sultan (or similar) in Saudi? And how often did you have to pull those high-level embassy patches on other missions?

Another flying story. There’s a highly classified base in the Middle East that I used to fly into. A lot. I’ve written about it before. It’s in the middle of the deserts in the Middle East and it’s mostly underground. Really interesting place. When we filed our flight plans on those trips, we couldn’t say where we were departing from. Just where we were going to. In those days, we actually “filed” our flight plans on a paper form. Somehow, knowingly, that stuff got transmitted somehow. On our way back up to Frankfurt, Germany, French ATC began asking us what our departure airport was. We weren’t allowed to tell them and they weren’t allowed to ask. I told them that. It got tense. They didn’t like that answer. They’re jerks anyway. When we approached the German border, German ATC denied our entry and we went into holding. For quite awhile. Our landing clearance in Germany was cancelled. The French ATC guys were working with the German ATC guys (how ironic, I thought). So, we were faced with diverting to the UK with some very sensitive passengers and cargo, or continue to our filed/intended destination. I was pissed. I got on the horn with our US Embassy over the radio. HF radios are super long distance and I was able to place a “patch” call to the State Department. They, in turn, patched me to the Embassy and I spoke directly with the American military attache. After about 45 minutes of holding, we were magically cleared into German airspace. Shortly thereafter, we touched down at our intended destination. I was a brand new aircraft commander (Captain) and I grew up quickly. It’s not just about flying the jet, that is assumed, it’s about dealing with the myriad of snafu’s that pop up.🇺🇸
