Artists, musicians, designers, filmmakers, writers, and innovators are invited to engage directly with URSB officials to learn how to safeguard their ideas and creative works. URSB will also offer guidance on business and company registration and other services that help creatives formalize, protect, and grow sustainable enterprises.

Celebrating culture as a key tourism asset, the @TourismBoardUg (UTB) partners with the #Ug1festival to amplify Uganda’s cultural appeal on a national and global stage. Sometime this year, the President had a function at Kololo. Power was in the air. Sirens earlier, road blocks around the independence grounds and pin silence later followed. I was moving along BMK Avenue in the evening, unbothered, just walking off the day. Then an SFC lady stopped us. Me and a few other men. No shouting. No explanations. Just authority. We were herded to a corner, told to squat, compressed into obedience. Then the instruction came, firm and almost casual from her. Do not look at the passing convoy. So we hid and squatted like schoolboys who had misbehaved, eyes fixed on nothing, backs to power. Engines swept past behind us. You could feel the convoy without seeing it. Speed. Distance. Untouchability. When it was over, she shamelessly told us to get up and life resumed as if nothing had happened. Fear those SFC women.

I can never sit in a meeting to discuss items or money to be given to me for my daughter. That would be an insult to my daughter, and a display of greed on my part. My daughter is not like a cow that I’m breeding for the market, for me to earn from her marriage. All I would wish for is a sensible man who would treat her right, and that they love each other. The introduction ceremony should basically be about the two families meeting and getting to know each other. Many young people in these hard times are no longer able to marry because of these retrogressive (primitive) practices that hardly ever get to be questioned. Today, Kukyala is a huge show-off function. Kwanjula is like a concert. Then a bigger religious wedding! Culture can be improved as times change. Otherwise, things that were once meaningful can evolve into a nuisance protected under the banner of CULTURE.
