From the article: "Hosted by Sarah Harris and Octavia Cordon, organizers with Free the Future WV, alongside Marisa Jackson, candidate for House District 58, the event reflects a growing movement to center families in public spaces of advocacy. “We believe families shouldn’t have to choose between showing up for their values and showing up for their children,” said Harris. “This space is intentionally designed so kids can participate. After all, they are part of the community we’re advocating for. They are the future.”
The event will include:
* A designated kid-friendly play area with activities such as cotton candy spinning, bracelet making, balloon art, face painting, and a designated play area for toddlers
* Space for connection among parents and caregivers
* A clearly communicated commitment to a nonviolent, respectful environment
* Coordinated safety planning to support a secure and inclusive experience
Kids Not Kings was created by parents and organizers who saw the need for more inclusive advocacy spaces—especially for families with young children and those with diverse needs. The event aims to model what community-centered civic engagement can look like when families are fully welcomed.
“When we make space for families, we strengthen our movements,” Harris added. “This is about building a future where our children belong…not someday, but right now.”
