📣📣 New paper! Continuity of GP care is associated with lower total NHS costs for people with dementia in their last year of life. Adds to the evidence that continuity of care is: 👉better for patients 👉better for the system bjgp.org/content/bjgp/e…

Dramatic fall in #GP partners in England - and big move to salaried GPs - and this is a fundamental aspect of #generalpractice #primarycare

Look at this figure - a huge rise in non GPs in the workforce in England - but what has this achieved- greater range of services in general practice BUT higher FTE of non GP direct patient care staff is associated with higher A&E attendances - policy makers take note!! #GP

Interesting to hear @SKinnock make the point in the health select committee that the #assisteddying bill has been a positive thing because it has encouraged people to talk more about death and dying. My experience is that it has increased fear about death and dying as the majority of the campaign has been about death being awful and something that must be controlled through ending lives early. Can he really claim this as a positive outcome? Particularly without robust evidence to support this? We need to talk about #normaldying and not pretend a campaign to legalise assisted dying has provided the education the public need.

Britain’s hospitals average 90% bed occupancy throughout the year, and 95% in winter. This is not normal! 1/3

The CQC has for a long time failed to demonstrate that they understand the principles of well-led, effective and fair assessment. Their assessments are therefore unsafe. And they are anything but responsive.
Heather Ryan@DrHFRyan

Is anyone else taking part in the @CareQualityComm engagement webinar today? This was my question to @BolaOwolabi8. The chair advised that specific concerns should be raised via the CQC's contact centre. But we made a formal complaint on 22nd Oct and haven't had a response yet...

I'm calling on the govt to support the amendment by @lucianaberger to extend the minimum age under this Bill - perhaps the most consequential of this generation - to 25, not 18. We must err on the side of caution when it comes to children's rights and lives.

I used to think the main damage from social media was to youth mental health. Now I believe that the global destruction of the human ability to pay attention may be even larger. A meta-analysis shows the damage, to adults as well as teens, from TikTok+ psycnet.apa.org/fulltext/2026-…
Adam Grant@AdamMGrant

Bingeing TikTok reels may be hazardous to your well-being. 71 studies, >98k people: The more short-form videos teens and adults watched, the more they struggled with attention, self-control, and stress and anxiety. Read a book. Watch a movie. Long live longform.

1. Why is Lord Falconer’s AS bill running into problems in the Lords? Many reasons, of course. But one underrated cause is what happened at committee stage in the Commons—and the choices made by the bill’s sponsor Kim Leadbeater.

At a clinical teachers forum today for a session on the implications for undergraduate medical teaching from a change in the law on #assisteddying. There was a loud gasp from the audience of experienced medical educators when this slide was shown. Comments revealed shock at how minimal training will be for most doctors (including psychiatrists and GPs who are arguably most likely to be involved), despite the gravity and irreversibility of the act. Also noted was the fact undergraduate training is not mentioned at all in the impact assessment.

Important and nuanced thread which deserves a careful reading. Continuity of care also helps, as well as a willingness to go the extra mile to keep reviewing a patient at risk of deteriorating.

⭐️What takes minutes & could save 1000s of unhelpful admissions?⭐️ I often hear (usually older) patients being told "𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐨 𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥". Which is rarely true. 1/11

In general the smaller the GP practice the better the satisfaction from patients, the more appointments offered per patient, the shorter the waits, lower costs Yet …@wesstreeting is pushing for large Neighbourhood Centres ignoring existing GP practices Why? What’s the reason?

So sad to see how Wythenshawe Hospital failed Prof Ray McMahon. When I was at Manchester Medical School I was privileged to be his deputy in the assessment team. He was a wonderful man who deserved better. May he rest in peace. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…
