6 essentials for setting a nearly 7 month long world record:
1.Focus on your strengths & lifestyle when choosing a goal: with a business & family I couldn’t just run length of S. America & back. Being able to get kids off to school, do my run, make dinner & work (calls during the run), computer work after was difficult but manageable. I was careful to choose a record I could do while still managing other important aspects of my life.
2.Make your superpower stubbornness: stubborn is defined as “having or showing dogged determination not to change one's attitude or position on something, especially in spite of good arguments or reasons to do so” which fully defined my WR attempt! This is a trait that often causes annoyance to those around me but it was a powerful tool to access when the going got tough, which was virtually every day.
3.Humble yourself: not every run was pretty, fast, fun or painless. In fact most runs were ugly to some degree, varied in pace and required me to swallow my pride and just get it done rain, snow, sub zero temps, sizzling 100F days, pains and aches, a foot of snow— you name it!
4.Choose a goal that means something to you: There’s no way I could’ve run an ultra a day without loving running and there’s no point in doing something just to do a record unless it means something to you. I could honestly say curiosity about what was possible AND a true love of running defined this WR.
5.It doesn’t matter what others think: Tune out other people’s opinions and don’t spend time reading comments. I would read a few comments for the first 20-30mins after I did my daily social media post. Then I’d purposefully avoid reading comments. The negativity almost always came after that first hour and it messes with your head if you read too much of it, not to mention it’s a waste of time. Many people will not understand you and that’s ok! I got really good at just sharing what I wanted to share and ignoring the buzz.
6.Break or breakthrough: Trust your body and adjust your pace based on its feedback. Trust that it will adapt. Movement is healing. Over and over I had issues that would’ve scared many into stopping: frostbite, shin pain so bad I couldn’t pull on a sock without excruciating pain, a weird ekg, pelvis pain that lasted 5 months, and more. All the above ended up ok when I trusted my body and did my own PT & massage.
I’m going to admit my ignorance now. I haven’t read any classic books (other than those I had to read for GCSE/A Level)
I’m thinking it’s about time I attempt Brontë, or Dickens but would love to know your favourite classic read. I really want to expand my reading.
@poornabell Also depending on the sorts of things you usually communicate about maybe messages that are boring stories about your day. Funny article you read. A TV/film/book recommendation. Something that makes them not feel like a person with a problem, iykwim
@poornabell Yes. And I would suggest avoid any questions - how are you doing, etc. A statement, hope there is some light in your day, etc makes it clear you don't necessarily expect a reply and removes any sense of pressure or obligation.
