Let’s see how our (UNOFFICIAL) combined Metro & Rail map would look with some possible* future extensions. We’ve added: - Metro Washington Loop - Leamside Line - Northumberland Line extension - Bensham Curve - Infill stations at Gateshead Quays, Murton, Belford & Killingworth.

I like the @OuseburnTrust’s ambitions to improve public transport links to the area as part of their 2030 strategy, including campaigning for a new Tyne & Wear Metro station on Stepney Road! #google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-eas… If it was ever to happen, maybe it would be something like this:

Wouldn’t that be awesome! ‘An imagining of how a Metro Station could be realised in Newcastle’s Ouseburn Valley’, by Miller Partnership Architects: millerpartnershiparchitects.co.uk/portfolio_page…

NE1 on the (quietly dropped?) international conference centre: “This would be a game-changer for the city and the region allowing us to compete internationally for major conferences and events and driving visits and spending from outside the region”.
Newcastle NE1 Ltd@NE1BID

Following yesterday’s announcement of £24 million in funding to progress plans for a new arena at Gateshead Quays, Stephen Patterson, Chief Executive at Newcastle NE1, has offered the following comment.

A £128 million vision to regenerate an “inaccessible and bleak” corner of Newcastle with new homes, shops, a multi-storey car park, and an urban park on a disused railway yard near Central Station have been submitted. 📍North of Pottery Lane, Forth Goods Yard, Newcastle.

@lewisstratford This proposal is for the north side of Pottery Lane, currently waste land with a temporary car park for staff on it. (See first pic above). The nearly-complete construction work is a separate development, on the south side of Pottery Lane:

The 2 apartment blocks by Olympian Homes, south of Pottery Lane, are really coming along now. After decades of standing dormant, it’s great to see development, (and plans for further), on these vast swathes of brownfield wasteland as you enter Newcastle from the south. 🏗️

@lf_p Is this where the construction work is nearly complete? Are they wanting it to be another main high street or more of an artsy centre?

The 7 vacant railway arches at Askew Road are currently receiving a makeover by local mural & graffiti artist @MarkOne87, to improve the public realm. It’s part of plans to turn the area into a space for pop up food stalls, performances & outdoor workshops, to increase footfall.

The old garage forecourt at Askew Road (east) has been opened up at both ends and paved throughout to improve the public realm here. Tree planting at either end, plus artwork to the archway doors is set to follow.

The Bridges Conservation Area by High Level Bridge & Tyne Bridge, once aptly named ‘Bridges Quarter’ has since been renamed ‘Gateshead Railway Quarter’ & a proposal for signage has been submitted. Separately, the old Askew Rd garage forecourt is to be paved to tidy up that plot.

That’s quite a big hole in the ground. Wasn’t this supposed to be a new conference centre?

Wooo nice new shiny bus stop sign in Prudhoe - wonder if @N_landCouncil will take away the old @arrivanortheast one - it's very nearly 16 years since they ceased operating in the town! PS some Bus stop Clear way and appropriate signage would be good 👍🏼 @KiMcGuinness

The Swing Bridge has costly mechanical issues, but can’t the graffiti be kept at bay in the meantime? It celebrates its 150th anniversary in June. A Newcastle city guide has said, “it is a source of embarrassment when I lead my domestic & foreign guests down to the Quayside”.

Look how good this looks 😭 it feels like we have an actually matured transport system identity now. Next step: Add the line to the Metrocentre and allow Pop/Metro cards to be used for that line too!
