It's great that Gabriel is naturally eating the way all animals recovering from starvation should - little and often, so as not to overload a traumatised body. This avoids refeeding syndrome, which is a potentially fatal metabolic condition that occurs when food is reintroduced too quickly after a period of starvation. When a starved body is suddenly overwhelmed with food it can cause severe fluid and electrolyte imbalances that lead to organ failure, heart issues, and death. Great for clever Gabriel, but a lot more work for me.😁 This is minutes after thoroughly cleaning Gabriel's pen, relining it, and putting out freshly sterilised dishes. I'd only just left to make up his soaked food... (You can see he's weeing and pooing at the same time as eating.)

Feeding ducks bread seems harmless. It isn't. Bread causes a condition called "angel wing", a developmental deformity where the wings grow twisted and permanently outward. The duck can never fly again. It's irreversible, and it's almost entirely caused by humans feeding waterfowl high-carb foods during their growth. The ducks that come running when you show up with a loaf are also the ducks most likely to become dependent, malnourished, and unable to survive winter. Peas. Corn. Oats. Lettuce. They'll still come running. Or don't feed them at all! they can find their own food.

But instead I’ve buried my head in the sand, hoping things would improve. Today, after really looking at our finances, the reality has hit me hard and honestly, I am scared for the future of WWP. @WWPdogs Like everyone, we’ve felt the impact of rising costs, utility bills, food and everything else that’s needed to run the rescue. But for us it’s even more devastating, because as costs rise, so does the need for our service. More and more owners are facing the reality that they can no longer afford to keep their pets, and that’s when they then end up being abandoned and needing us to save them. Right now, our biggest worry is that we owe over £12,526.76 in vet fees. This isn’t from anything unnecessary, this is from doing what every dog needs before they can leave us to start their new lives…neutering, vaccinations, basic care. But many of the dogs that come to us also need far more lifechanging procedures like BOAS surgeries to help them breathe, extensive dental work often from years of neglect and much more. With fundraising getting much harder and donations going down month after month, I genuinely don’t know how we can carry on. So today, I’m putting my pride aside and asking for help If we could just clear these vet bills, it would give us the breathing space we desperately need to steady ourselves and keep going for the dogs who rely on us. I know times are hard for everyone. I know people are struggling. But if you can spare even a few pounds, it would mean more than I can put into words. Every single donation, no matter how small, is a step towards keeping WWP alive. I also want to say this is not a criticism of our vets, they have been incredible. @libertypup @bernibernese Exactly right, thanks. As you say, the lucky ones go to a rescue shelter, but no figures exist showing how many thousands of dogs are being killed in council pounds because rescue shelters across the UK are full.

Please delete this. It's not only very wrong, it's harmful. If you see a hedgehog 'lingering round garden work' or anywhere else in the day, she's seriously ill and needs taking to a rescue (never a vet) urgently. Hedgehogs do NOT 'natually control slug and snail populations'. Slugs and snails are the intermediate hosts of lungworm - deadly to ALL mammals. The hedgehog has no magic immunity. Only a hedgehog already dying of starvation would eat a slug, just to stop the pain. If hedgehogs really could eat slugs without dying of lungworm they wouldn't be endangered through starvation, and they wouldn't need to hibernate, as there would never be a food shortage. And compost bins need to be tightly secured against wildlife being able to gain entry. They are HAZARDOUS. Hundreds of hedgehogs die from compost bin poisoning every year. They are attracted to these man-made piles of rot by the warmth, as we've destroyed their natural habitat. Decomposition of ANY material is a process that produces gases and pathogens. It's the basic priciple of how composting works!😊 And decomposing material in the compost piles can start to form mold. Some molds cause a simple gastrointestinal upset, but some are deadly. Decomposing organic matter in a compost bin can contain fungi which produce neurotoxins called tremorgenic mycotoxins. These naturally occurring substances are highly toxic to both humans and animals. Although the contents are deadly, the invertebrates the compost attracts make it very inviting to the insectivore hedgehog, who trusts it as a source of food, warmth and shelter. The compost bin will be particularly attractive during the winter as it can provide a warm dry place to nest. Very few people realise that consuming even a small amount of compost containing these mycotoxins can be deadly, and there is no cure for this poisoning. Often people who find unexplained dead hedgehogs in their garden have no idea it was their open compost bin which was to blame. ⚠ If you or your neighbours have a compost bin, please ensure it is safe and inaccessable to wildlife, and your pets. totallyvets.co.nz/the-dangers-in…

@domdyer70 Please consult @HedgehogCabin before posting misleading information to your many followers. If you want to do something good for hedgehogs and educate people on their welfare, take the post down and support/repost @HedgehogCabin who have been rescuing these creatures for years.

@bernibernese @AdoptionsUk The Local Authority does not have rehoming facilities for dogs found straying. They usually just have 'holding' kennels/pounds where dogs can be claimed by owners, or after a short time, the lucky ones are moved to Rescue for assessment, rehabilitation, rehoming and support etc.

She needs an organisation that will stand by her and see her through until she can’t eventually be rehomed. This poor girl was found tied up and CCTV was found with the dogs owner tying her up at night. The finder had her at home for the night and she was a good girl. Vet check as her belly and vulva are swollen. Vet has said there is a possibility she may be pregnant. Pound are worming with panacur in case she is so not to harm any puppies. She is lovely with people and completely handleable but she is reactive to other dogs. She will need proper assessment but on leash she does react when she sees other dogs. She kennels well. They are also talking of reducing the steroid to try and let his immunity build back up. Hopefully that doesn’t set back any progress from the PLE (his stomach today was far less swollen)… so still not out of the woods by any stretch.. but so happy to take him for walkies ❤️‍🩹🐾

Pippin update: i was allowed to take Pip for a little walk around the grounds of the hospital today. It was so nice to see him a bit brighter and picking up sticks. Tomorrow he is having an operation to remove dying and dead skin from his hock (not showing photos) 😣

Please retweet, another poor dog taken to the vets by their owner to be pts, now saved by New Hope Rescue #CANTERBURY #KENT #UK This week we were contacted about this 12kg crossbreed who was taken into a vets to be put to sleep. We are told the dog had an altercation with the other dog in the home after they were left locked in a crate together. She’s only 18 months old and not yet neutered. The vets reached out to us and held on to her but we’ve now moved her into emergency boarding kennels. New Hope will find her neuter. She’s a very sweet girl. Great news is we have now organised a forward space with one of the wonderful rescues we work with who go above and beyond to help. Once the space is ready we will organise her transport.
