I find perpetuals to be really interesting philosophically because they exist as an almost-perfect financial tool, but without a strike date, there is really nothing tying perps to the actual goods being traded in the market. BTC oldheads constantly complain about this, usually calling them "paper bitcoins," since one could open huge longs into BTC perps without putting any upward pressure on the spot price. I know that market makers in the perps markets are also often making markets in spot too, which can allow them to essentially harvest the money of perps users by stop hunting them, if such data is public like on HL, so its not necessarily true that perps markets have no effect on spot pricing, but it does seem like ultimately perps markets cause spot assets to trade at lower prices than they would otherwise.
