It’s been a month since Tokitae passed. 53 years stolen from her. Toki, a gentle, sweet natured soul. Her long time trainer, Marcia, was preparing her for her move to a seaside enclosure. Marcia posted at Toki’s passing “This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you”.

Canada is moving to restrict the captivity of elephants and great apes through proposed legislation known as Bill S-15, which has passed the Senate. The bill seeks to prohibit keeping species such as elephants, chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans, and bonobos, with limited exceptions for conservation, animal welfare, or scientific purposes. Currently, around 25 elephants and just over two dozen great apes remain in captivity across Canada, mostly in zoos. In the wild, elephants travel long distances daily, sometimes up to 50 km, while great apes depend on complex social structures and stimulating environments. These needs are difficult to replicate in captivity, where conditions especially in colder climates, can contribute to both physical and behavioural challenges. The proposed law would also prevent their use in entertainment, including rides and circus-style performances. If enacted, Canada could become the first country to phase out elephant captivity nationwide, building on its earlier ban on keeping whales and dolphins in 2019. The move reflects a growing global shift toward recognizing animals as sentient beings with needs that are often incompatible with captive settings. Sign & Share Petition: Send Alice The Elephant To A Sanctuary @CWIntl have filed an emergency complaint with the USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service notifying them about the escape of Alice the Elephant and serious ongoing issues at the Albuquerque BioPark Zoo. On the morning of March 29, 2026, 52-year-old Alice was able to damage and escape her enclosure. She was ultimately found by staff on a public walkway after having consumed a variety of plants and trees. An escape of this nature endangers the Elephant, the public, and staff. Sadly, it follows a pattern of behaviour previously noted by APHIS at Albuquerque BioPark Zoo over many years and in the last year in particular: It is clear that the Albuquerque BioPark Zoo is failing in its duty to keep animals safe and properly cared for in clean and appropriately tended habitats, which violates numerous AWA regulations. The Zoo is part of the larger Albuquerque BioPark and is run by the City of Albuquerque. The city must take immediate action to remedy the serious failures that led to elephant Alice escaping her enclosure and walking freely throughout the zoo. Even with improvements, elephants DO NOT belong in zoos.
