If AI art is theft, then inspiration was illegal the whole time. Artists study artists. Culture builds on culture. That's how art works. You don't get to invent a new definition of stealing because your status feels threatened.

Joseph Gordon Levitt has been publicly against AI for years. Is now starring in a film about AI. Guillermo Del Toro said “Fuck AI” while promoting Frankenstein. Hannah Einbinder says to AI creators “You guys suck. No one likes you” while promoting her new show. What I am learning is traditional Hollywood types are using AI to get in the headlines to boost their work. It’s going to become a trope at some point and is already starting to become disingenuous and even mean spirited (as is the case with Einbinder), especially when serious traditional filmmakers are increasingly experimenting with AI and younger new filmmakers are using it to tell their stories. I’m not sure when and how the Overton window shifts on this but statements like Einbinder’s or Del Toro’s which are so extreme like this seem to me to signal an increasing need to prove a deeper hatred for AI than others. I don’t buy that Puritanism wins out in the long run, especially if people who have less privilege stand to benefit.
