Pleasure to join panel at the @heraldscotland Budget Briefing to give a business view on the Spring Statement The Chancellor’s signal that further trade deals will be central to her growth strategy is hugely welcome for #ScotchWhisky, but action on home front through root and branch review of the duty system - due this year - can reduce the competitive disadvantage faced by distillers in the UK

New data: HMRC receipts show that revenue from spirits taxation fell by £154m YOY between April-October 2025, the biggest fall of any category. With a review of the alcohol duty system due this year, government should re-evaluate the idea that high tax equals high revenue. Fair treatment of spirits delivers revenue, supports growth, and backs a home-grown sector. 🔗 Read the full story 👇 bit.ly/3MMMJfJ

The latest spirits revenue data was published by @HMRCgovuk this morning Spirits revenue down by over £150m year on year as a result of the 17% duty increase over last three years. @hmtreasury prefers to use full fiscal years to assess impact - well, 2025/26 is on track to be the first year since 2019/20 when spirits revenue does not top £4bn The trend is clear - the tax burden on #ScotchWhisky must fall to raise revenue and boost growth
