The city's name "Mumbai" itself derives from "Mumba" (a variation of Maha-Amba) combined with "Aai" meaning mother in Marathi. According to legend, she appeared as an eight-armed goddess (sent by Lord Brahma) to defeat the demon Mumbaraka who terrorized the original seven islands and their Koli fishermen inhabitants; in gratitude, the demon asked her to include his name, hence Mumba Devi, protector of the land and people. Her historic temple in Bhuleshwar (rebuilt in the 18th century) remains a revered shrine where devotees seek her blessings for strength, protection, and prosperity, symbolizing Mumbai's spiritual roots amid its modern hustle.

We do not yet have the full copy of the judgment, but I can share what we submitted to the Court. Our essential argument was that a person who has converted from an SC/ST background into Christianity cannot claim the benefits or protections of the Act... The Court was categorical: once someone converts to Christianity, caste benefits cannot apply, because Christianity does not recognise caste. The decision is also rooted in the 1950 Presidential Order, which has long been part of the statute book. The judgment clearly defines who is entitled to claim benefits under the Act and who is not. Of course, a review petition remains an option, but as of today, the matter stands settled. In this particular case, the individual was a pastor who had converted, and our submission was that he could not take advantage of SC/ST protections..."
