@Matt_Levine_1 Trackman has mostly been phased out, though. Still used at some lower minor league levels, but most teams are switching to Hawkeye even there. That said, trackman provides the the most important data (pitch and batted ball tracking) as a cost effective alternative to Hawkeye

@Matt_Levine_1 Depends on the sport. Baseball is far ahead of other sports when it comes to analytics. Even on the public side there’s a wealth of analysis on sites like fangraphs and baseball savant

Difficult to overstate the shortcomings of even "modern" sports analytics relative to current AI/ML, pure math, stats, and computing capabilities. Spatiotemporal tracking data that conceptualizes the field/pitch/court/rink as a 3-D coordinate plane and conceptualizes the players+ball as a network/graph are under a decade away from proving that many human-observed "principles" of how you're supposed to play soccer, basketball, hockey, etc. are simply laughably wrong.
Google DeepMind@GoogleDeepMind

To map the pitch, TacticAI uses graph neural networks - treating all 22 players as individual nodes and their physical interactions as connections. This allows the club's data science department to virtually drag and drop players to test different defensive setups in real time.

@GarlicFryRy They weren’t top prospects until this year besides Eldridge. That takes development and Farhan wasn’t apart of that development at all. All he did was pick the player and of course he will get all the credit but none of his players will be developing under him and most didn’t

Buster did a great job assembling a 2027 pen, though, ngl… Randy Rod Hentges Foley Miller Gage Some other candidates. Too bad 2026 will have to suffer as they develop/get healthy.

The Giants lost 4-3. That one's a gut punch, and wasted huge nights for Logan Webb and Jung Hoo Lee. Pitching for a third straight day, Keaton Winn gave up three runs in the top of the ninth. The Giants continue to pay for not building bullpen depth in the offseason.

Pardon Brewers starter Kyle Harrison if he doesn't feel the same affection about playing in Las Vegas. He entered the game with a 7-1 record and 1.57 ERA, yielding only six runs in his last 7 starts since April 28. Tonight: He gave up 8 runs (6 earned) in 2.1 innings with 3 HRs.

I wish people who complain about "analytics" (which is still happening in 2026, TIL) would be more precise in their complaints. It usually sounds like they're saying "those who want access to this information should be kept in the dark," but surely they're not because that would be diabolical. I think it's more displeasure in how this information is being communicated to them, which would be a fair complaint. Not everyone has an academic mind. You don't need to know what exit velocity is to understand the importance of hitting the ball hard.

@C2Cbsbl I don’t blame Posey, because Posey knows baseball. I blame Ownership for pushing GM Zach Minasian (Farhan 2.0) on him, and this team. Posey and Vitello are baseball guy’s, while Minasian is an Analytics stooge. Remove him, and let the Common Sense Baseball guy’s run the team.

Posey deserves prison time for the bullpen he put together, and honestly the pitching staff as a whole This team cannot win games if it’s close late #SFGiants

@C2Cbsbl You do some research, and find out on your own. I know for sure they are, which makes this conversation ridiculous. Again, you have no idea who I am, who I know, and what I know. That’s okay, but I’ve been trying to save you, but good luck thinking you know.

@klwoodjr Ehh not really. I think the general sentiment is how far the game has gotten away from the human element and fans, players and some front office folks pushing back on that a bit now.

@OutOfTheVines He’s talking about the bullshit stats that all the analytics guys in the Padres front office r feeding him that is only turning him into a mental midget. He needs to cut them all out and go back to what got him there and he will be fine.

@ERodCal @mike_petriello I guess it could just be geared at that archetype in general, but I agree. Runs scored are just as important as runs batted in. Though I think the better dig at a Wade/Belt profile is that they were slow and OBP/wRC+ probably overestimates their ability to score after reaching

@JoezMcfLy Answers things like: - what will this guys ERA look like at the end of the year? - if this guy went from a team with good defense to one with bad defense would he still be good? - how good is this pitcher at doing the things he has total control of (walks, strikeouts, HRs)?
