30 million people are currently subject to #ModernSlaveLabor (MSL). Since 1995, over 60k people have been rescued from MSL in Brazil, with 30% of those working on cattle ranches. Public enforcement, transparency, traceability and supply-chain sanctions are needed to end MSL.

Excited to have this paper out - important work is being done to combat encroachment into Conservation Units and Indigenous Territories in Brazil but much more is needed.

Very happy to have my paper with Daniel Phaneuf, Lisa Rausch, and Holly Gibbs out in @GEC_Journal! Fun journey to better understand the implicit value of formal property rights in the Amazon and Cerrado biomes in Brazil. doi.org/10.1016/j.gloe…

@ryangrim Not that it changes the overall story but the government doesn’t monitor the soy moratorium and it has nothing to do with illegality of deforestation.

Okay, this might seem bad, but in Stephen Schwarzman's defense, he made $568 million last year, which was down some $200 million from his 2017 pay, so he had to do something to turn things around theintercept.com/2019/08/27/ama…

Cattle ranchers and others burn the Amazon every year at this time, but this deserves the attention it is getting. This year they seem to be doing it more and are emboldened by the political situation in Brazil. washingtonpost.com/weather/2019/0…

I think I stole this from someone else on the internet, but being angry at huge corporations for useless surveys is as good a hobby as any.
