@loc8code @PatLeahyIT Nah.
We just hate Jews in this country.
It's ok to say it now, Mr Anonymous.
It's fashionable to say these things again.
Just say what you feel, sweetie.

Maybe we should ask Ireland’s small population of Jews what they think about anti-Semitism

@FitzellMarcus @PatLeahyIT simple - Ireland has invested significantly in peace in that part of the world through the UN. 10's of 1000's of Irish military have served in the Middle East, almost 50 have lost their lives there in service to better lives for local people. Ireland knows Israel from experience.
English

@PatLeahyIT Very good piece, quite unusual in today's Irish media. The last paragraphs say it all really. Why is it always Israel that so many here in Ireland are so frenzied in their opposition?

The International Sniper Competition Ireland 2026 brought dozens of teams from multiple nations to The Curragh and Glen of Imaal for a week long test of sniper skill, fieldcraft, endurance, observation, communication, pistol work and long-range precision.
The winning team was the Michigan Army National Guard’s 1-125 Sniper Team. SPC Angerman and SPC Zwiers coached by CPT Halas became the first Americans to win the competition. Taking 1st Place Overall, 1st Place International Team, Top Sniper for SPC Angerman, Top Spotter for SPC Zwiers, and the CS John Killen Memorial Top Pistol Award for SPC Zwiers.
The rifles pictured appear to be a U.S. Barrett Mk22/MRAD, a modular bolt action platform capable of being configured in 7.62 NATO, .300 Norma Magnum and .338 Norma Magnum. The optics setup appears to include high magnification Nightforce/Leupold class sniper glass, with a top mounted Wilcox RAPTAR or similar fire control/rangefinding module above the scope. It combines laser rangefinding, aiming/IR functions and ballistic support to help generate firing solutions without the shooter coming off the rifle.
Other teams involved include Irish Defence Forces unit sniper teams, Army Ranger Wing, U.S. Army conventional and special operations teams, Marine Corps teams, and further international teams from countries such as the UK, Canada, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark and other European nations.
A serious result for the Michigan Guard, congrats! 🇮🇪 🤝 🇺🇸

@McConalogue @eircode @Postvox it would be useful if you all explained to the public why this is necessary & the related restrictions/limitations. I'm sure you'll agree it is important.

The Dáil debated irish defence policy yesterday.
Ireland must be free to deploy troops abroad according to our own defence needs at any time. No foreign power should have a veto on this 🇮🇪
Helen McEntee TD@HMcEntee
The proposed Triple Lock reforms are about strengthening Ireland’s sovereign decision-making, ensuring decisions on Irish troop deployments are made by Ireland, not blocked by foreign vetoes.

As the only person in the 34th Dáil who has served in Óglaigh na hÉireann I welcome a conversation on neutrality and the separate matter of reform of the Triple Lock.
Neutrality and the triple lock are not the same thing.
Ireland has been neutral for more than 80 years - long before the Triple Lock was created. Ireland will be neutral after the triple lock is amended.

@chris_byrne So if there was an app that would show your nearest or 3 nearest eircodes and the distance in meters that you could give to the call handler it would save vital minutes. Thanks

Went down a rabbit hole looking for an Eircode API for a project.
Turns out the official Eircode data is not exactly cheap to use directly. The website licence from UK firm Capita is around €3k per site per year. And the API providers listed on Eircode were either priced for heavier commercial use or started around €80/month. Some had "call for quote on the website", which is never cheap. More than half of the API firms are UK providers.
That was more than I needed for a simple lookup and the project has a strict EU only stack mandate.
Then I noticed something obvious.
Google Maps already returns reliable address results for Eircodes. So I built a lightweight API that bridges the gap. It works in both directions.
Give it an address, it returns the Eircode. Give it an Eircode, it returns the full address.
It also returns lat/lon, a Google Maps embed URL, the place ID, a formatted address, and any business name Google associates with the location.
To make it easy to try, I put together a small demo at eircode.dev. You can look up any Irish address or Eircode, and the result drops a pin on an interactive map. Drag the pin around and it reverse-geocodes the new spot in real time.
There are Two ways to use the API:
1 Open source version, Use your own Google Maps API key and run it yourself.
2 RapidAPI version, Plug it straight in with simple monthly plans (there is a free one)
Try it out here: eircode.dev
API docs and link to the Open source code are on the site too.

@chris_byrne @_Menachem_m @conoro 1000's of codes & corrections may be missing.
All of this imposes a need to license official sources if your application needs complete & correct Eircode & Irish property address data.
Misrouting in navigation is also an issue covered here: checkyourcode.ie/newsblog

@chris_byrne @_Menachem_m @conoro 2. GMaps has an approximate 2 yearly update rate on geospatial data. (normally & unless a major recent change). 1000's of new, corrected and retired Eircodes are released quarterly. Capita advises the public to contact GMaps directly to have these included. Therefore, 1000's -/
