@ahardtospell I am guessing for 2) it’s mostly what not to do/cautionary tales Or is there more to it?

I'm working my way through the Federalist Papers in their entirety and I did not expect the amount of time allocated to 1) Foreign policy/grand strategy 2) The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth

@phl43 Many Poles refuse to believe that we might be in the ballpark of South Korean or Japanese income levels simply because they have Samsung, LG, Hyundai and Toyota, Sony and Nintendo. Having a less concentrated, more diverse economy seems to help Poland during crises.

I wonder if there isn't a lesson here though. Many developing countries try to catch up by creating "national champions", but Poland suggests that a more balanced and less flashy strategy might be preferable. What matters at the end of the day is to raise productivity and create enough well-paid jobs. Perhaps "national champions" are sometimes helpful for that, but if you can do that without creating any, I don't see why you should care.

Interestingly, Poland stock market is only worth $305B in total market cap. HSBC alone is worth that much. Not to downplay Poland but they still don’t have companies on par with British companies like ARM or AstraZeneca.

@NJSussexGuy @Peat_Mindset1 @Landeur it's also going to be grimly funny in a few years when people like you repeat Vance's criticism of Europe in the Bush era: that we should have been more independent and assertive and told Bush to fuck off; but this war of choice in ME for bullshit reason is of course OK

@NJSussexGuy @Peat_Mindset1 @Landeur and the fact that this does not register with you because your idol spews some unhinged rants on TV, is what makes having a reality based relationship with the US harder; especially when people with your attitude move from social media into places of real power

Trump trying to use the Falkland Islands as a pressure point is not sensible. The lefties in the UK already hate America and Trump. This won’t change that. But on your current trajectory nationalist / patriotic Brits will start to hate you too.

@justincbzz tbh when it comes to AA losses much of the difference in AA system density and proximity to the front; Russia has a metric ton of Tors, Buks compared to UA AA density and RU push their AA closer to the frontline so you should expect more RU losses because more, closer targets

Russia no longer has Starlink and their ISR drones are getting decimated. This is no longer 2024 where their drones were casually flying over cities and witnessing Iskander strikes. Ukraine on the other hand has massively scaled middle strike (FP2, HX-2, RAM-2X, Bulava, Hornet), has access to dedicated SAR capabilities and their ISR drones generally survive longer than the russians ones due to RU lagging capability interceptor wise.

@ncapeyronSABA @phl43 to believe the moon landing was fake you have to believe in some illuminati or reptilian world government level of bullshit and then everyone has their strings pulled by the same secret cabal including US, Soviets, Chinese, etc.

@DanielR33187703 I hope you are right, but deciding the Russian air defence stocks are close to exhaustion based on the rate of Bars flights is not based on a causal relationship.

@DanielR33187703 ehhh… tbh that’s a „just so” story You could just as well write that Russia successfully disrupted Ukrainian drone production which is why you see fewer of those. Or that Ukraine struggled with scaling up production of the Bars or decided it’s not cost effective.

@GuyPlopsky right now I see people on Twitter claiming this might be recycled from one of the Kuwaiti crashes, but I guess we will know soon enough whether it's copium we'll know for sure soon enough, but it seems like they got their first air defence kill

@policytensor The Arabian plate is converging with the Eurasian so the Hormuz strait will close by itself in a few millions years effectively rendering this entire issue irrelevant.

@PeterMeijer In the same way that every European country who told Bush to get lost was right in 2003 and every country which joined was wrong. Which funnily enough is something Vance and some MAGA crowd was talking about. But now Trump wants to offload his self inflicted shitstorm on us.

@PeterMeijer There’s only so much we can do. The person who made these comments is retarded. If this is truly the prevailing sentiment among US decision makers then there’s nothing Europeans can do. Us not following the US into your war of choice on behest of Israel is the correct choice.

It would behoove our NATO allies to appreciate that this sentiment is *very* widely shared, including amongst erstwhile boosters of trans-Atlantic relations.

The Administration would almost certainly assert and litigate that POTUS has the inherent constitutional power to abrogate treaties. I am not optimistic about how SCOTUS would rule given the existing precedent. Namely Bush’s unilateral withdrawal from the ABM Treaty.
