Latest update: have gone to try out https://t.co/sn4yacL5eS - if you don't hear from me, it's either better than twitter or has scared me off the internet

@poltheoryother Built hugely, and nationalised anything that stayed still long enough. Souch so that even the next Tory administration couldn't undo even a fraction of the good they managed.

@Suw There were definitely left wing people making similar arguments when Johnson won, pushing against the "will of the people" mantra. Perhaps the difference this time is how much those opinions are being amplified.

@lucas42 And that's a problem. Johnson's win was portrayed as all about "the will of the people"; Starmer's win is being portrayed as all about maths, and lots of people are very suspicious of maths.

So, I have a few thoughts... It's just utterly boggling my mind, all the weird concern trolling and catastrophising that people are doing about the new Labour gov’t. Not just from Tories either – most of what I’m seeing is from people I know to be left-leaning. 🧵

@Suw The left are bringing this up in reaction to the media claiming Starmer's policies resonated more with the public than Corbyn's in 2019. But all the vote count / vote share numbers suggest the Starmer's campaign won because they're good at electoral maths.

@ndgromit @TerribleMaps I think native language is less confusing than official language for a map like this. Scotland has 4 official languages - how you gonna colour all them in?

@kelseyhightower @swagitda_ Working in security now, I'd love to see: * Website which says what the product actually does, not convoluted business outcomes * List of tools the product replaces, rather than pretending it's a unique snowflake * Sales team admitting which use cases are not in product's scope

@oldenoughtosay @miclugo You don't actually need an account - anonymous edits are allowed. What you do need is an understanding of their bureaucratic internal policies and the time/inclination to follow them. Otherwise you risk people just reverting whatever you do.

@TfL @TfLAccess Yeah, that @TfLAccess feed is a load of rubbish. It posted that Southwark was closed at 11:40pm and then never posted anything about it reopening again. But I'm literally in the station right now. Never trusting that info again.

@TfL Hi, where can I find the opening hours of Southwark station for NYE / New Years day? The paper sign that's still on display in the station is more of an aspirational guide, than anything I can rely on for journey planning tonight.

Another day, another email: Eurostar from Brussels to London requires check-in, because it is a Eurostar. The Eurostar from Rotterdam to Brussels has *no* check-in, because *that* Eurostar is a *Thalys*.

@TfL Thanks for your response. What happens at 2am? Will it close again or does it open fully without restrictions?

@lucas42 Hi Luke, Southwark station is scheduled to be open for exit only, from 2330 New Years Eve until 0200 New Years Day. The station is however currently closed due to the unavailability of station staff. Thanks, TA

@timreay @JasperJanssen @seatsixtyone Interesting! Was there more border control at Brussels when your train arrived? Or could this be used by British passport holders wanting to outstay their allowed time in the EU?

@JasperJanssen @lucas42 @seatsixtyone They could do (and used to do) but you’d need to have an EU or UK passport and not require a visa. You’d be technically in the UK for a few hours.

@lucas42 @seatsixtyone You’re effectively (handwave handwave) already on UK soil once you get on that train, with advance border checks. So I don’t see how they could possibly sell interior travel seats on it.

@oldenoughtosay I suspect they've been saying this kinda vile thing behind closed doors all the time and the whole lot of them think it's fine (or at least tolerated). It's only now, with the government's power waning, has the news story become more valuable than keeping ministers onside.

@theirishfor Nuair a bhí muid óg, cheol muid "Rudolf an Fia Rua". Mar sin, shíl mé gur chiall fia rua "reindeer". Ach d'amharc mé é suas just anois. Is "red deer" iad - an cineál a faigheann tú i nGleann Bheatha! Ní raibh fíos agam go raibh Rudolf as Éirinn...

The Irish for a reindeer is réinfhia (as opposed to fia, which is a regular sort of deer). The "rein" part of a reindeer's name has been the subject of much folk etymology over the years.

@SwiftOnSecurity @notshenetworks Years ago, I had a customer service person at Amazon tell me they had no bug tracking system anywhere in the company! Feels like some companies deliberately firewall off anyone building their software from anyone who has ever talked to a customer.

@notshenetworks Uber eats as well. Tried to report a bug they endlessly argued my eyeballs don’t work in chat, after I convinced it to connect me to an agent (there is zero external support contacts and chat is a machine loop unless you type demanding an agent)

@KnowingBetterYT I love how, despite being the canonical example of a one-hot wonder, Chumbawumba had one of the longest and most varied discographies of any band I know.

Do we still have one-hit wonders in music anymore? The prime example that everyone points to has always been Chumbawumba's Tubthumping, but that was 26 years ago. Surely we have a more recent example...

@JayHulmePoet @FirstOrderPixie There's two measures of time for a long haul flight: number meals in plastic trays served since takeoff, and number of movies you can watch on the back of the seat in front of you before landing. Everything else is irrelevant.
