Woman gets arrested for leaving her puppy in the car in 96 degree heat while she shopped for almost an hour.
A shopping trip turned into a felony arrest in Lady Lake, Florida, after a 26-year-old woman left a defenseless puppy trapped inside a sweltering car.
On Saturday, May 16 2026, Lady Lake Police officers responded to a Five Below parking lot after a witness spotted a black puppy in distress. The heat index was soaring, and the dog was locked inside a white Mercury Grand Marquis parked in direct sunlight with the windows barely cracked.
By the time officers Jeffrey Burns and Michael Tisdell arrived, the puppy was panting heavily and desperately scratching at the glass. Acting quickly, the officers were able to reach through the gap to unlock the doors. The bodycam footage shows the heartbreaking moment the thirsty pup was finally given water and moved to the safety of an air-conditioned patrol car.
When the owner, Yeneese Mystic Morejon, finally returned to the vehicle, she claimed she had only been gone for "30 seconds." However, witness statements and police investigation confirmed the puppy had been suffering in that oven for 40 minutes to an hour.
Morejon was arrested on the spot and charged with Animal Cruelty. At the time of this incident, she was reportedly already on felony probation.
Leaving a living being in these conditions is a complete failure of basic empathy. A car can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes, turning a "quick errand" into a death sentence. Someone who shows such a blatant disregard for the life and safety of a pet has forfeited the right to be a pet owner. This puppy deserves a home where its life is valued—Morejon should never be allowed to have an animal in her care ever again.
