@Nickyshearsby22 Words have multiple meanings. If you mean "the act of decoding letters on a page" then no, but reading ALSO has a broader definition of enjoying a work of literature. Does it really matter if you're doing it thru paperback, ebook, audiobook, braille, Mom reading it to you, etc?

I accidentally got into a bizarre debate on Instagram yesterday about Audible books NOT being classed as reading. Who's with me on this? Audible is listening, NOT reading.

@WilChanWrites Those in the top brackets have an *average* of 61 books published. That's a very apples & oranges comparison for your typical indie novelist.

I know many self-published authors are doing great, but I honestly find it hard to believe that 4 out of every 100 authors are making 20k+ per month! Am I wrong to think that? (This is from the Written Word 2024 survey)

@Gingerblast It really depends on how you run your campaign. A power disparity can either be irrelevant (if there's a way for every PC to contribute meaningfully) OR it can be a miserable experience when you're twiddling your thumbs while the higher powered chars mow through every obstacle.

I get why some games would want to keep the PCs at the same level, and I used to do it this way. I find power disparities interesting and the right player can have fun and still be a major driver to the campaign at a low level. I understand this isn't for everyone.

I'm genuinely surprised that I'm in the minority on this issue. I bring in new players at starting level with the assumption that they will catch up fast, and I also (in my godstein game) let them create a new god in the pantheon and have a major effect on the world early.
Harmony Ginger@Gingerblast

Responses from the past few days got me wondering... how do people normally handle it when new players join an ongoing RPG campaign with higher level PCs? At what level do the new characters start?

@izmartinsen Whatever works! I'm willing to accept the risk that I edit something that later gets cut. So what? I get a cleaner deleted scene, and have a better draft that needs less editing when it's done.

“Don’t edit as you draft” Okay??? Who’s gonna stop me? Certainly not my perfectionist ass that can’t move on until she’s happy with every sentence.

@ana_scribe I personally see 3-stars as "good", but many algorithms disagree. For ex, Amazon explicitly classifies 3-star reviews as "negative". This affects who even gets to see that the book exists. Rate how you see fit, just understand the impact it has on books/authors you might like.

when are authors going to understand that 3 or 4 stars aren’t bad ratings LOL they’re actually extremely good ratings

@Wisteraverse @RobSanders56 That's absurd. Why would anyone want to ban an entire punctuation mark? I guess there could be an author that overuses them, but that doesn't seem like a widespread problem by any stretch.

This is a good question. I use "?!" outside of writing a manuscript (MS). For an MS, I was told to avoid exclamation mark at all costs, so I try to use a comma & a dialogue tag: "That's great, isn't it," she scoffed. But I wish people weren't so snobby against "!" in an MS.

@Cleo_Gray I would never turn one off in a public place - that's super rude. But FWIW some of us are sensitive to sounds and I've never found an air purifier that didn't make a very low background hum that nagged at my brain all day. (And believe me I'd love to have one b/c of allergies.)

we have one in every room and they don’t even really make any noise like an air conditioner or fan. why do they freak people out? it’s so passive. what is so offensive? even if you don’t think Covid is a problem? dust, smoke, pollution. i can’t see a downside.

@adriiennebooks @jennelikejennay Thanks! I'm not familiar with book2book unfortunately. Ebook is on Amazon only, but audiobook and paperback are wide so you can find them most places.

Hey if you're neurodivergent or think you might be, and you've written a book that's for sale, can you reply to this? I'm trying to read more ND-written books, especially autistic-written books, because they click with me in a special way. And I'm sure I'm not the only one.

@DennisMPowers @BookSpotlight "What you do with it" is the basis of all fair use, though, digital or otherwise. I agree there's room for improvement in both the laws and the remedies. (I think Tom Scott's copyright video explains it well.) I just disagree with the argument that no protections currently exist.

If we just link to our books, no data can be trained off that, right? It’s just tweets? So if we watermark/glaze images and don’t post writing excerpts, does that prevent AI using our creative stuff?

@jpmccarthyjr People play for different reasons and enjoy different things, so there is no one universally best system. I've played both ways and far prefer systems where I can play a character that interests me vs one assigned to me (either randomly or by GM pre-gens).

I have played ttrpgs where character creation is completely random- not just stats but race, gender, class/occupation, and so on down the line. It can produce beautiful moments where you end up with an interesting character that you wouldn't think of yourself. What say you?
Harmony Ginger@Gingerblast

I've found that this problem is helped by using random chance in character generation. 3d6 down the line and maybe other random chance built into character generation makes players excited to see what their next character will be.

If everyone was a little autistic… I would not need any accommodations, as the world would be made for me. What things do you think would be different if the world would actually consider our wants and needs?
