من أكثر ما أحب في أعمال برنارد كورنيل أن القارئ بوسعه تلقي المعلومات التاريخية من الكاتب بكل ثقة نظرا لمعلوماته الرهيبة والبحث الجبار الذي تتطلبه كل رواية من رواياته. معلومة اليوم أن الهنود، خلال الحروب المراثية ضد الإمبراطورية البريطانية، استعانوا بمقاتلين مرتزقة عرب عرفوا بالشراسة والهيبة في ساحة المعركة. كالعادة، سارعت إلى التحقق من المعلومة وثبت فعلا أن الهنود استعانوا بمقاتلين معظمهم من حضرموت منذ القرن السادس عشر، لكن أعدادهم بلغت ذروتها خلال الحروب المراثية (1775-1843)، وكان المقاتل اليمني يتلقى أجرا يقدر بثلاثة أضعاف أجر المقاتل المراثي، و يفوق أيضا أجر المرتزقة الأوروبيين. وتضاعف الطلب على خدماتهم فظهرت وكالات لانتداب المقاتلين من اليمن. بعد انتصار البريطانيين في الحرب المراثية الثالثة، قاموا بحل الوحدات اليمنية سنة 1818 ودفعوا لهم مستحقاتهم على الهنود حتى يرحلوا من الهند. لكن عددا منهم بقي في الهند ولم ينته تأثيرهم الفعلي إلا في سنة 1848.
