Air Refueling: The Most Unnatural Act in Aviation You’re at 25,000 feet, 300 knots, tucked in tight behind a KC-135 or KC-46 like a remora on a shark. The tanker’s boom is dancing in your windshield like a drunken conductor’s baton. One wrong input and you’re either sliding off into the slipstream or kissing aluminum in the worst way possible. This isn’t gentle flying. This is fingertip precision in a 200-ton machine while the tanker is bouncing through moderate turbulence. Your right hand is on the throttles making micro-adjustments, left hand on the yoke, eyes locked on the director lights and the boom operator’s signals. No autopilot. No margin. Just you, the boom, and pure concentration. The conversations are sometimes fun, but always professional. One time, as part of 7 C-141s on 7 KC-10s, my copilot and I donned hats with stuffed jackasses on them and the boomer howled. 😎 I’ve done it for 30-45 minutes straight in weather that made the boom look like it had a mind of its own. You’re soaked in sweat even at altitude. Lights on the belly of the tanker and constant scanning is key. One moment of lost focus and you lose the contact — or worse, damage the receiver or tanker. We’ve all seen the videos. Nobody wants to be that guy. And NOBODY wants to be the dweeb that has to make the Walk of Shame back in the squadron hallways and buy beers forever. 🤣 Air refueling is where comfort ends and warfighting begins. It’s ugly, sweaty, intense… and when you finally top off, disconnect, and slide away with a thumbs-up from the boom operator, you feel like you just won a knife fight in a phone booth. WE GOT BLESSED AGAIN BY AN ABSOLUTE ANGEL IN MODESTO! 🇺🇸🙌 Today an incredible American friend took our whole family to Costco showed us the magic of those prices that still blow our South African minds and just spent time getting to know us. What a joy! We laughed, we talked, we felt the warmth of real American hospitality. Then she asked what we were doing tonight. We told her we were packing for Texas because this is our LAST night in Modesto. She looked at us and said, “Nope. I’m not letting you leave on an empty stomach.” Next thing we know she’s booked and fully paid for a proper feast at @fuziomodesto! We tried to protest (it’s too much!), but she wasn’t hearing it. And brothers and sisters… that BURGER! My word! It tasted like the first proper meal I’d had after being lost on a desert island for 20 years. Juicy, packed with flavour, absolute perfection. If you’re ever in Modesto, go to Fuzio and order the burger. You’ll thank me later. Modesto, you have been good to this Afrikaner refugee family. From the bottom of our hearts THANK YOU.
