@alhahn15 I remember that observation! Would be fun to figure out what the gL-free gH complexes exist in rhesus rhadinovirus. So much unhelpful dogma from HSV being first to be defined, keeps people's minds closed to seeing / imagining the true diversity of entry complexes, innit?

Excited to share this preprint! In 2016, Caló et al reported a gL-free envelope gH complex in CMV. We found a 3rd part of the complex— the part that likely binds receptors, show a role in entry & thanks to our collaborators, solved a cryo-EM structure 🧵 biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

@macroliter Excellent! There are anti-virals for Cytomegalovirus. I wonder if this information might lead to additional antivirals. Certain it could lead to a good vaccine.
