The death of my uncle in Cairo and the desensitised medical care of Elaj Hospital in Cairo. My uncle, Dahir Ibrahim, a 72-year-old, arrived in Egypt from Somalia in December 2024 for cancer treatment. He went through both physical and mental hardship while being treated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Both his cancer treatment and its price were reasonable, and we are not complaining about that part of his care. Uncle Dahir was eventually cleared by his doctor, who gave him the option to either stay in Egypt for follow-up appointments or return to Somalia and check in with a doctor there in a few months. Uncle Dahir wanted to go home badly, and he was finally scheduled to leave last Sunday, August 3rd. But God had another plan for him. We didn’t know it then, but his final home the grave was destined to be in Egypt. He became terminally ill and was admitted to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with severe pneumonia. He spent eight days in the ICU (Intensive Care Unit), which cost his family, including me, over 200,000 EGP (more than $4,000). Uncle Dahir passed away early on Thursday morning under unclear circumstances. Although he was very ill, Uncle Dahir was conscious and stable on Wednesday evening. The hospital called us Thursday morning to inform us that he had passed away. It is believed he died from a lack of oxygen. The saddest part of the story is what happened next. After we had cleared all the bills and were about to take my uncle’s body for burial, the hospital demanded that we give them back or pay for the single white sheet that wrapped the deceased's body, as he had died in their hospital bed. We believe my uncle died from a lack of oxygen, but that is another story. What surprised me was that the hospital staff never expressed any condolences or said they were sorry for our loss. Instead, they kept insisting that we pay the balance. I found them to be inhumane and heartlessly materialistic, like creatures in the bodies of human beings. I will be lying if I say that I was not very disappointed with them.
