After hosting dozens of crypto events at conferences over the last 6 years, I thought I'd branch out and went to Mexico City's art fair for research. An art fair is basically the same thing as a crypto conference, just for a different industry. They do three things drastically better: 1. Focus on showing the work. The actual produced work is the primary agenda. You walk in and you're surrounded by it. Tech struggles with this because the work lives online, but that's not an excuse, just a lack of imagination. Even if it's just a few iPads at the booth, it can be made tangible. Crazy how little effort goes into showing what we're building at events that cost so much. 2. They take relationships seriously. Art fairs lean fully into why these events exist: relationships. Real time and effort goes into creating spaces that foster connection, build trust, and keep people coming back. Relationships move every industry. Tech people act like they don't, but they do. Let's design for it. 3. Brands extend. Brand collaborations in the art world are more daring, and somehow still make sense. Salomon sponsoring a party that's literally just beautiful people in a room and it works, because the association is right. An interior design company focusing on lamps collaborating with a well-known local restaurant to customize a space mixing lights, seafood, and art. Even if they only sell a fraction of what's on display, it's all about extending the world of the brand. Crypto events are so timid, renting a bar and calling it a "happy hour." Excited to bring a lot of this into what we're building this year @boundless_xyz .

Over the years, we have built some of the most important onchain financial primitives. We later expanded that ambition to social primitives that users truly own. We built the Lens Protocol and its underlying onchain rails, including state-of-the-art decentralized data storage for content, governed by smart contracts. Our goal was to create neutral social infrastructure that developers could rely on to build consumer-grade applications capable of reaching mainstream users. Today, stewardship of Lens transitions to @masknetwork, builders of Orb, and a team focused on advancing Lens at the application layer. Lens social primitives will always remain open source and will forever serve as infrastructure for anyone building social applications on decentralized rails. Our team will continue as technical advisors, while we continue to innovate on what has always been our core expertise: DeFi.

I admire the intention and think this RFP is predicated on an instructive misunderstanding Bauhaus was not an aesthetic, but a new school of thought. They changed the ambitions of art and pedagogy, and (incidentally) beautiful and strange things emerged. That is why it was radical and successful. The root of this misunderstanding is why it often doesn’t feel like we have new aesthetics. We do, but they fall far short of the high ambitions of the modernists. The incentives of the attention economy have produced new aesthetics and rituals that would look alien to anyone last century. Slop is a very new aesthetic. Fluorescent streamer caves are new. Body horror Botox influencers are new. The extent to which we are dissatisfied with them is the extent to which we feel the governing logic of our culture is perverse. The opportunity is to fund new schools of thought with a new ambition for art (I have ideas). There are no shortcuts but ample opportunities. If understood they will really be onto something.
