Again, maybe my take here is unpopular but I index quite anti-paternalism. If the founders just put “backed by” and your face/name or whatever, then it is a completely unreasonable leap of logic for a future investor to conclude anything except “cobie thinks the product might be good” OR “cobie thought the investment round he participated in was good ROI”. I think a very low amount of people believe that if you buy something in a funding round, potentially years ago, that you remain in perpetuity an endorser of purchasing that token at any price. For example, if Erica buys a new stablecoin protocol called DonkeyDollar at 10m valuation in 2022, and in 2024 it launches and trades at $20bn valuation, I think it’s unreasonable for a new investor to assume that Erica’s investment is an endorsement of buying at the current price. I think it would be reasonable for them to assume the protocol is well designed since Erica reviewed it and liked it. This can be useful signalling, but could also be misleading since a lot can change between when you fund things and when they actually launch. So, in my personal opinion, it’s fine to have “backed by” announcements and labelling because it is not suggesting those people endorse an investment at the current prices. Actually for a while I had a side letter when I invested in things that didn’t allow the founder to write my name anywhere, partially out of this fear. But I stopped doing it because actually I think, unless you run some central disclosures page, that this is actually pretty bad behaviour — because it means you can have many undisclosed financial interests and when you talk about certain topics in crypto generally you could be promoting your own bags without really anyone knowing about it. So ye a bit nuanced but typically my view is: disclosure and transparency is good, and omission of info out of fear of people taking obviously incorrect conclusions from that info is paternalistic. (Obv answer changes if founder is being dishonest with using your face/name and making it seem like you’re supporting in some way other than investing in a previous funding round.)
