Early this morning, just before 5 a.m., I was walking my dog in Tucson area when he suddenly froze and started pulling me backward hard on the leash. I scooped him up, and right as I turned, I spotted it… a bobcat crouched low beside a boulder, staring straight at us. My dog was trembling in my arms. This is our second wild cat encounter on a walk, so I knew what to do. I backed away slowly, never turning my back, until I could round the corner. Then we booked it straight home. For my friends overseas: here in the Tucson area, mountain lions and bobcats regularly come down from the mountains and desert into neighborhoods and even the university campus. A bobcat is about 18–24 inches tall at the shoulder (46–61 cm) and weighs 15–35 pounds (7–16 kg), think medium sized dog. Mountain lions are much bigger… males typically 115–220 lbs (52–100 kg), females 65–140 lbs (29–64 kg), standing about 24–35 inches at the shoulder (60–90 cm) and stretching 6–8 feet long. Always stay alert out there, especially at dawn and dusk. Respect the wildlife! 🐆🚨🙏
