I doubt this will happen, but it should happen. There are simply places in the LA area where homes probably shouldn’t exist. Medium term the lack of ability to get insurance will probably do the same.

Many of the homes along this stretch of the Malibu coast have burned down. We need a fair buy-out program for the affected owners—between fires, mudslides, and sea-level rise, I just don't see how it makes any sense to rebuild.

@joncstone Agreed, and will be way worse through Bank - Leadenhall if they allow taxis through Bank junction.

good start but needs: - Two way cycle track on Queen Victoria St should connect to C6 at Blackfriars without splitting - Needs a bus gate on Leadenhall St (or protected lanes) as it's too busy for a cycleway - Westbound cycle lane on Aldgate High St needed too
Squarehighways@Squarehighways

Have your say! We are consulting on proposals to transform Leadenhall Street and plans for a new, high-quality east-to-west cycle route. The consultations both run until 9 February 2025 📢 leadenhall-street.commonplace.is citycycleway.commonplace.is

Glad to hear The Cally Liveable Neighbourhood is going ahead. Really excited about the improvements to Rufford - Carnoustie St. it’s a great route to Kings X. Hopefully a safer cycle crossing of Caledonian Rd will come in the future. letstalk.islington.gov.uk/the-cally-live…

@SCP_Hughes The best part about this development is the new fine grain walking network. Can’t wait!

Current and proposed, Shoreditch. The existing buildings are far from meritless, but this seems like a streetscape improvement, as well as adding density in an area with some of the most acute floorspace scarcity in Europe. By KPF.

@IsSaddleThereIs Nope, this is Mildmay Rd at Newington Green. It’s going to be an awesome E-W link! Work’s going on now are the lower right side of this plan.

Some actual holes in the ground today. This will be the kerb bump out + rain garden. It will be nice to have a larger outdoor space by the pub!

@MacLondon @hackney_cycling @joncstone Really feel like that should be narrower with give way signs to improve compliance. Islington seems to be doing the same thing (Notably on Colebrook Row). We’ve challenged that and asked them to look at making future filters narrower.

@HistoryOfStokey @LAnderson_Frank @StokeyUpdates Totally agree, thus the initial subsidy idea. Clearly people enjoy having local shops, as several are doing quite well. I was thinking more along the lines of areas infill shops in areas that currently have a bit of a schlep to the high St to promote walking over driving.

You’re making an assumption that a shop in a backstreet will be able to survive and I don’t think that’s a foregone conclusion. There are reason to think certain businesses may thrive in that setting, but some won’t. Quite a gamble I’d say. When those shops were built originally in the mid-late 19th century, people for example had to go and buy fresh food every day because there was no way to store it. People didn’t have cars and there were no shopping centres apart from certain street markets, so shopping locally within a walking distance was a basic necessity. The 15min City was simply the norm :)

The regulations enabling compulsory high street rental auctions (HRAs) have been made and will be in effect in England from 2 December 2024. The aim of the scheme is to reduce vacancy rates and improve the use and perception of local high streets. irwinmitchell.com/news-and-insig…

@MacLondon @joncstone This is awesome. Last bit of infrastructure needed for a safe cycling route E-W to Victoria Park. I would normally get off and use the zebra when riding with the kids, so this will be a nice upgrade.

@joncstone On its own, the Hackney section of C37 provides a useful connection to Victoria Park/NCN1 from C27. The🚦were (over)due to go in at Well St junction more than 4 years ago when the pandemic struck. The Elsdale St modal filter has since made crossing Well St less treacherous.

@HistoryOfStokey @LAnderson_Frank @StokeyUpdates I was thinking more about the small backstreet shops that seem to be disappearing. There are plenty of places where it is quite a walk to the main high street, which is precisely why the shops were there in the first place.

@LAnderson_Frank @StokeyUpdates @marcus73 I’ve counted approximately 120 shops in the former Borough of Stoke Newington that have been lost. From corner shops, a parade of 3-4 shops to an entire shopping street (Allen Road). Used to be 20 shops in Nevill Road. Various reasons why all those backstreet shops disappeared.

@StokeyUpdates I really feel that everyone should have a walkable corner shop for basics within 5min max. We use ours constantly, and even now send the kids on their own to grab something for us when we’ve run out. I feel comfortable with this because the shop keeper knows us and the kids.

@StokeyUpdates Do you know if there are regulations in place restricting conversion of retail to residential? I really feel like to many of the hyper local retail areas are slowly disappearing (Allen Rd, etc), which likely leads to more driving as people have to go further to shop.
