@cuttleboycutie @atlanticesque It is basically true that the Democrats as a whole were almost always the more left wing party, where they went off the rails is in claiming that this has any modern relevance at all or that their loss of these voters wasn't in large part over race (among other social issues).

@atlanticesque @maritimechud is this the blood memory behind the PragerU & friends "the Nazis were socialist, the Left are the KKK" bleating? i remember YouTube was replete with this sorta polemic?

Everyone's mocking this as laughably naïve—prefiguring modern leftists idealizing poor ruralites—but its not entirely wrong? Johnson *was* an ardent unionist; he really did deeply resent the southern gentry who had led the rebellion. He was just also racialist (and incompetent)
LINCOLN+161@jfkplus60

London journalist Karl Marx writes to his colleague Friedrich Engels: "Lincoln's assassination was the most stupid act they could have committed. Johnson is stern, inflexible, and revengeful and as a former poor white has a deadly hatred of the oligarchy."

@turpentineman @theramblingfool This is actually a pretty good rephrasing of the scenario because I feel like it's the one I've heard in which the fewest people would change their vote.

@theramblingfool Everyone is in an individual private room with a ticking time bomb and two buttons. Press the red button to defuse your bomb. The blue button defuses everyone’s bombs but only if more than 50% of people press it; otherwise it does nothing.

I've gone through great lengths to emphasize changing the hypo changes the hypo. So I'll emphasize: your answer does not have to be the same. But this is a good cousin of the original moving more towards actual possible scenarios, and I wonder how many reds change to blue here.

@cremieuxrecueil I think 'capacity to understand a language' to the extent necessary to understand the concept of a choice' is implied, but by no means is reason itself implied.

@cremieuxrecueil The cope that 'vote' implies rational actors that red pushers are deploying is so obviously absurd. No one has ever suggested that exclusivity to rational parties is implied by the worst 'vote' until they had to come up with an excuse for killing infants.

Accurate cartoon. In my polling, almost 6% of people said they picked the wrong button when they were prompted about it. Assume the global error rate is higher and kids' responses are random, and easily 1-in-6 to 1-in-5 hit blue by mistake. So, if red wins, society is ruined.

@asukagrypr Crazy how all this criticism comes from people supporting the totally freakish Trump-era GOP. These are all speakers from the last RNC when the RNC co-chair was literally his daughter.

@SolArcticus @ZoomerHistorian Weidel is a moderate figurehead to keep the party from being banned because it's controlled by ethnic nationalists on all other levels and Ukraine isn't going to exist in 20 years.

'Individual holding a single flag while marching' registers to me as distinctly leftist and socialist imagery. Very aesthetically muddled that it's meant to just be a generic national flag.

@leftwick20 I remember always assuming that he was quite insincere and would publicly convert to Evangelical Christianity at some point, but his commitment to all these things that are to some extent a political problem for him is pretty surprising and actually a bit respectable.

@QuayeRoyal @blaisew_c The Pali canon abounds with references to Brahma and other such divine beings. It's different from a religion where the worship of these deities is the central act of religious practice, but their existence is acknowledged and part of a larger schema of reality.

@QuayeRoyal @blaisew_c its own system above this cosmological and divine hierarchy (with awakening and Buddhahood placing oneself above the gods and all beings in conditioned existence), but it's still ultimately a religious system. These beliefs are quite central to Buddhism rather than incidental.

@QuayeRoyal @blaisew_c Notably Theravada preserves the idea of a 'supreme' god, Brahma, in the Pali canon at least and rebirth includes a hierarchical series of material and spiritual realms arranged in a very distinctly religious manner. Where it most breaks with Brahministic religion is in placing...

@QuayeRoyal @blaisew_c Original Buddhism (most reflected in Theravada) is also thoroughly religious, containing within itself a set cosmology, the implicit belief in higher spiritual orders beyond humanity, and other such aspects. A premodern philosophy-religion distinction tends to be artificial.

@blaisew_c Nonsense. It's true that the Mahayana tradition has many features of a "religion," but the same is not true of classical orthodox Buddhism, Zen Buddhism, or the secular Buddhism we've developed in the West. Read Walpola Rahula's "What the Buddha Taught". Buddhism is philosophy.

@planefag It's easy to figure out eventually, but adding an extra few minutes trying to figure out how to download it every time when it could be solved by having a big 'DOWNLOAD' button makes the user experience needlessly terrible. I want to spend as little time on GitHub as possible.

There are 0 good Modern Day GSGs! Some have been made, but they all suffer from only partially-working mechanics and truly terrible UX. It's the GSG subgenre with some of the biggest design challenges and the lowest amount of funding due to potential controversies/profitability

@Anglo3000 @Romy_Holland This isn't actually a question of universalism at all. If people perceive those around them to be blue voters then voting blue is interpreted as a duty to one's immediate family, most people will probably automatically assume that at least some people they know are voting blue.

I've only talked to maybe a dozen friends about whether they're red or blue button pushers, but within that group there's an obvious correlation between being worse at modeling others and pushing the red button. I think it's easy to paint it as an empathy thing, and that's true in some instances, but I think for many people it might be about an inability to grasp that other people think in radically different ways.

@Anglo3000 @Romy_Holland There's a high degree of collectivism/clannishness amongst those sorts which makes it likely that they will vote blue if they perceive those close to them as likely blue voters. This only works if you mentally model them as purely self-interested, which isn't exactly accurate.

@Romy_Holland Red button pushers are obviously better at modeling people. You take a internet poll that 100,000 white people answered, and you extrapolate the results to 3 billion Indians and Africans. That makes you worse at modeling people.

@LinkofSunshine The idea that it seriously affected unionization in the long run seems really silly. The US government didn't kill unions; but if you want to say that then Carter's injunction against striking miners in 1978 makes way more sense chronologically.

One of my most controversial takes is that Reagan firing the air traffic controllers was mostly fine The union was basically completely out of control, they purposely directed a jet into a heavy thunderstorm to send a warning! They got 48 hours warning to return with amnesty
