When I was Secretary of State for Multiculturalism & Canadian Identity (2007-8) I tried to obtain official status for the Red Ensign as an historic flag of Canada; and to have the historically correct versions of it flown at pre 1965 war graves and battlefields. In fact, I appointed an Historic Flags Advisory Committee with the hope that they would make recommendations in that vein. Unfortunately, the advisory committee was gridlocked, and the idea was greeted within government by a mixture of indifference and opposition. At least we secured the Prime Minister’s approval to mandate that the Great War none province Ensign be flown at the Vimy Memorial, where I believe it flies to this day! My office also produced these fantastic posters of historic Canadian flags, which were distributed to schools, libraries, etc, and I believe are still available through Canadian Heritage. The concept is universal: wrap seasoned meat in carbohydrates and bake until golden. Yet, the definition of a "pie" changes drastically depending on where you stand on the map. While the English definition usually implies a pastry lid or base, the global interpretation is far more liberal. In the Balkans, Burek is a masterclass in geometry, where thin layers of phyllo dough are rolled into spirals around a savory beef filling. In contrast, the British Shepherd's Pie abandons pastry entirely, using a thick, toasted blanket of mashed potatoes to seal in the minced lamb. Morocco’s Pastilla defies culinary logic by mixing savory poultry with almonds and powdered sugar for a complex sweet-and-salty profile, while South American Empanadas are designed for portability, sealing juicy beef and egg inside a sturdy, hand-crimped dough pocket.

Wildfires in Newfoundland and Labrador have rapidly worsened. Canadian Armed Forces members and Canadian Coast Guard teams are hard at work to deliver critical supplies and firefighting support, with further support arriving today to assist local first responders.   I just spoke with Premier Hogan about the escalating situation, and reiterated that the federal government stands ready to provide whatever additional support is needed.
