@PaulSkallas Smalls jazz club in NYC plays live jazz every night—8PM-4AM. It is always packed. I’ve been going there for 10 years. The line is only getting longer.

Cities are a later invention. Towns have existed long before cities. People have to be in a city now because that's where jobs are and where the dating market exists But the human wants to live at town scale. The best urban neighborhoods feel like a town inside the city. The worst places in the city feel the least like towns. That's why good urban neighborhoods are so expensive to live in. You're paying for a town.

Small towns are almost complete devoid of culture because everyone interested in culture inevitably moved to a big city

As evidenced by the unbridled promotion and implementation of technology at the expense of human dignity, we are truly experiencing an eclipse of the sense of what it means to be human. It is imperative to recover an understanding of the true meaning and grandeur of humanity as intended by God. It is in this sense that the challenge we currently face is not technological, but anthropological, and it is my hope that the Encyclical Letter to be published within a few days will contribute to answering this challenge.

@Herrojuku Anthony Edwards was benching 275 in highschool… The NBA now competes with the world. If he wants to be in the league another 7 years, he’ll have to get substantially stronger. We see how Castle is locking up SGA in the WCF—strength matters (obviously).

Shannon Sharpe believes people speak differently now about Kobe Bryant in all time rankings because of the tragedy that happened: “People speak differently about Kobe now because of the tragic passing. They didn’t speak about him in the glowing terms. — Y’all know it. Go back and look. It’s on YouTube. Some of the analysts that speak so glowing about him now, didn’t use to speak in those same terms. That’s it. Let’s say Kobe’s last game you had him around 8/9. Who has he surpassed? He hasn’t made another game winning shot, championship, finals MVP. So my question is, who did he pass?” (Via @NightcapShow_)

@avidseries Modern Irony: Successful men create dependents; successful women want to be independent. You can’t rely on foreign labor because the increasingly “egalitarian” 3rd/2nd world is following suit.

This is a good description of our new reality: Under ideal financial circumstances, men will want marriage and a family; under similarly ideal circumstances, women won't. Does this reveal true preferences? Conservatives will hate this, but it may be the case that those traditional social expectations women faced back when they had much fewer options, may have actually been oppressive. And the evidence for this is that as soon as women are able to escape those expectations, they do — and we're seeing the result around the modernizing world in plummeting fertility rates.
Whyvert@whyvert

Newly published: men who win the lottery are more likely to get married and have children. Women who win the lottery aren't. As in the Baby Boom: there was good income for young men (but not women) which boosted marriage and fertility.

I am a childless person who actually really likes and tolerates children well (probably for being a teacher for so long), but all the parents in the comments and QTs sound genuinely bitter and jealous. If your life is fuller with kids, you don’t generally get mad at childless people have their own thing going on.. right ? So weird.

I wonder how much of the ire directed at AI is (a) jobs vs. (b) fears of surveillance vs. (c) annoyance at how AI was shoved down our throats without consent Like we didn’t ask for our kettle bells and toaster ovens to connect to WiFi for app subscriptions and now AI feels like the same thing. Basically the whole 'internet of things" (IoT) craze made products and every day living WORSE and even more expensive because too many things required apps, subscriptions and cloud dependency. It was sold as “smart” and convenient, but mostly it just locked us into ecosystems and created new failure points. Now AI is conjuring up the same sense of deja vu - suddenly it’s in your search bar, your photo editor, your writing tools, your customer service, your car, and even your light bulbs. The public never really opted in. It was opt-out at best, and often not even that. So I think some of the ire is Luddite rejection and exhaustion because all this was sold as inevitable progress but it's created instead, nostalgia for the old products and appliances.
Christina Kueppers, LL.M in IP & Technology Law@cvkueppersbooks

I attended the University of Arizona commencement ceremony, where Eric Schmidt @ericschmidt faced boos throughout his speech. If you don’t know how young graduates feel about AI, this post is for you. The message is clear: it reflects growing skepticism toward AI narratives coming out of Silicon Valley. I keep coming back to one question for anyone building AI: are you building for humans? Build responsible and ethical AI. AI governance and compliance matter. (Speech excerpt.)
