The protests in Mt Kenya are not fundamentally about fuel prices. The fuel hike is merely the convenient rallying point. Beneath it lies a deeper political grievance; Gachagua’s impeachment. The protests are aimed at destabilizing Ruto’s administration and reasserting Mt Kenya’s dominance in national politics. For decades, Kenya’s politics has revolved around the assumption that power must orbit around Mt Kenya interests. Any shift away from that arrangement is always interpreted as persecution rather than normal democratic transition. But Kenya is bigger than any one region. No community has a permanent entitlement to power. Mt Kenya’s entitlement must be dealt with once and for all. Every community in Kenya deserves a seat at the table.

Why, in God's name, is the military boss endorsing politicians?
Sharon Kyomugisha@SharonKyomugis2

Gen @mkainerugaba publicly endorsed Oboth Oboth for Speakership and the race appeared to politically settle almost immediately. Last week, he returned and publicly endorsed @Thomas_Tayebwa for Deputy Speakership. Different result. Over 16 MPs have since expressed interest in the same Deputy Speakership position. Does this suggest some MPs are unconvinced by Tayebwa, uncomfortable with continuity from the previous Parliament leadership, or simply believe the position is still politically open despite the endorsement?

I was forwarded this image on WhatsApp, and it’s been making rounds all week. This was June 1997. Moi was in power. Fuel prices and cost of living were high and our rights were under attack. 29 years later, different era, same struggle. Kenya is blessed with so much potential, we cannot remain trapped in an endless cycle of corruption, poor priorities and injustice. We must unite and put in place leadership that can truly break this endless cycle of unnecessary misfortune. #TuunganeTujikomboe

Kenya’s problem is not silence. It is that leaders hear citizens clearly and still choose arrogance.

Removing Ruto in itself will be the biggest lesson ever to any politician. Anyone else who comes after that will have to deliver of face the same fate. The Citizenry will be emboldened more to demand better governance. So it is very IMPORTANT that we remove him.

Graffiti is beautiful art, and the High Court ruling declaring graffiti on matatus illegal is backward, retrogressive, and lacks basic common sense. A matatu is not a judge’s car or a courtroom that must appear drab and dull. As a creative who has mentored graffiti artists since 2010, I have helped a number of them to secure opportunities to travel the world and showcase their work. Kenyan graffiti artists are among the best in our continent. They have created beautiful murals at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, the Central Bank of Kenya, Safaricom offices in Nairobi, and many other respected establishments. In a country where millions of Kenyans have no jobs, this ruling will only result in creating more unemployment, kill an entire creative ecosystem, increase police harassment, and erase the beauty of our matatus, which has been acclaimed globally. The only thing the government does very well is introduce rules and regulations that make it harder for Kenyans to work. It suppresses our creativity because it hates to see us building anything outside of its control. Kenyan leaders and administrators are incapable of creating anything. They only know how to steal and use their positions to award themselves lucrative government tenders. The beautiful graffiti designs on our matatus have evolved into a culture - one that supports many people to earn an honest livelihood. The government has no business interfering with them as they harm no one. In fact, graffiti on matatus is akin to mobile advertising. Is the government going to outlaw that as well? This ruling must be appealed immediately and common sense must prevail. All nganyas should pick a day and do a tour around Nairobi to make a statement that graffiti is beautiful and should not be declared illegal. I support graffiti in matatus, and when l take power those ugly pillars of the expressway (with dead plants) will have beautiful graffiti painted on them. The only thing I would encourage graffiti artists to do is start painting the faces and stories of Kenyan and African heroes.

My take: The govt let this rally happen (an atrocious thing to say, because freedom of movement should be guaranteed, which it isn't) to gauge how popular Linda Mwananchi is in the Lake region. Optics matter, and this can't be brushed off, whatever 'paid' spin you put on it. Ruto is interested in the popular vote. Doesn't matter to him who holds the cards. What matters is whether the cardholder can bring the votes to his stable. There is no Bible that says Luo votes must go to Ruto via Oburu's camp. That is key. And after Raila, there is no guarantee that any of his survivors can whip all of Luo Nyanza to one poll bucket. Which is why the pro-zoning team is desperate to lock out interested parties from "ODM zones", whatever that means. I am not buying the idea that this region will vote itself out of government after years of marginalisation, unless the next vote guarantees 'pawa'. ODM may yet vote for Ruto; the question is, which ODM? If someone else can influence the people outside of the status quo one way or another, for Ruto or elsewhere - and signs are there that there are a few- a lot of 'big' Luo Nyanza heads will roll in 2027. Yote tisa, kumi ni, uko kadi?

BTW, sisi wa broad based hata hatujasikia vibaya. Lakini hawa vijana wa boda walituuza! Walikula pesa wakahepa. Omolo naye alikataa kuleta teargas. Polisi wanaangalia tu na tuko kwa sirikali. Tutatuma report kwa Ruto. Tunataka zoning. Tunataka pawa.

KNOW THE POPULATION ESTIMATES OF YOUR CITY 1- Soroti City 135,000 People 2- Fortportal City 138,000 People 3- Hoima City 145,000 People 4- Mbarara City 232,000 People 5- Gulu City 233,000 People 6- Lira City 245,000 People 7- Jinja City. 300,000 People 8- Mbale City 380,000 People 9- Arua City 384,000 People 10- Kampala City 1,800,000 people Therefore, Soroti, Fortportal and Hoima Cities should pull up their socks. We need better numbers for trade and attraction of Manufacturing investments. 😜 What seems to be correct though is that people are more in Cities where there are more opportunities. @DuncanAbigaba @MAGEZIKIRIINJJU @woira_michael

My boss called me on a Thursday. Told me 400k was missing from the money delivered to his house. Then asked if I delivered the complete amount. I said yes. He said okay and the call ended. That was a week after I delivered it. My boss was the kind of man who only spent mint notes. Fresh from the bank, always. His house never stopped moving, family, visitors, religious leaders coming and going. I was the one he trusted with money. Had handled millions before and never once a problem. That day I delivered 2 million in 200 naira notes to his 15 year old son. Exactly as instructed, the boy took the bag and walked straight to his room. He didn't count a single note. I didn't think much of it then.

In 2002 there was unanimity of thought amongst the opposition that it mattered not who would replace Daniel Arap Moi. If that approach is adopted this year without contestation on whether it is Edwin Sifuna, Kalonzo Musyoka or Fred Matiangi then the desired change will be attained.

Can we agree that there is only one thing you do with an illegal structure: tear it down? In Uganda the person who knowingly builds an illegal structure must be shown where to go before you tear down their illegal structure! If we keep doing this then we shall NEVER stop having illegal structures. Ugandans will build them because as they come done their owners end up benefiting from government.

Students at Lenana School then known as Duke of York, sunbathing on the lawns and relaxing in their dormitory in 1957. When the School was established in 1949, the then Governor of Kenya Sir Philip Mitchell vacated State House and moved to a house in Ngong to allow the first batch of students to use the official residence as their dormitory until the construction of the school was completed. The school which was strictly white until 1960, had employed people to do janitorial and laundry work for the students. The students also enjoyed pizza, roast lamb and cupcakes prepared by chefs who had to adhere to strict dietary guidelines in preparing the meals. ~Levin
