Here's how the DeSantis proposed Florida congressional map (left) would split Tampa to avoid a blue seat in Tampa Bay. East Tampa/Ybor joins Citrus County. Downtown Tampa joins Pasco. South Tampa joins deep suburbs. St. Pete would split north/south. (Current map on the right.)

@MappingFL Something to watch: There was a lot of movement between 16 and 13 after Helene, lots of folks moving to the cheaper areas around Gandy/Pinellas Park/Largo after their waterfront homes were destroyed. Doubt their registration has been updated.

Luna is out of a seat with this map.
Bilirakis would likely run in 13, forcing Luna to run in 16. 16 has North Port, the largest Ukrainian pop. in Florida. Large Ukrainian pop. in South Pinellas too. If GOP wants that seat, they need a pro-Ukraine candidate.

@umichvoter Yes - 16 and 14. No one lives in that eastern part of 14 & 16 (except farmworkers and my liberal aunt). south tampa and south st pete are VERY blue. The unmeasurable part is the impacts of 2024 hurricanes on voter distribution. Lots moved after well after '24 and haven't updated.

Gerrymander or Dummymander? This map is an absolutely unlawful violation of the Florida Constitution. The Legislature should reject it. The courts should strike it down.
That being said, there are 12+ seats that Democrats could still win under this map in this cycle.

@mattyglesias Eliminating a Dem seat in St. Pete/Tampa is not smart. All those seats are now vulnerable. Lots of swing voters, lots of mobile liberals moving in, big Latino population. Dems flipped a Tampa seat with plurality R voters. He overshot.

This is smart map-drawing by DeSantis to be honest, what you want to max is maximize the number of GOP seats in a close election (which this does) rather than try to salvage the unsalvageable 2026 cycles

We have a DRA map! General takeaways: Rs are targeting 4 Dem seats: FL-09, FL-14, FL-22, FL-25. However, if Latinos revert, strong chance Rs only flip ONE of them IMO. In now Trump+10 FL-14, Castor outran Kamala by 8 in 2024. Meanwhile, FL-22 was Biden+3 & FL-25 is Biden+5.

This is such a dangerously aggressive gerrymander I’m like 90% sure it’s intended to be held up/struck down by the Florida courts so that DeSantis can play grievance politics rather than actually be put into place for November.
