Across Africa, taxpayers continue to bear the crushing burden of public debt contracted in their name, often without their knowledge, participation, or benefit.
Corruption thrives where accountability is absent. Complicity flourishes where legal frameworks are weak.
This must change.
The African Borrowing Charter provides a clear roadmap for transparent, accountable, and people-centred debt management, because citizens deserve to know who is borrowing, how much, and for what.📥 Access the full Borrowing Charter here 👉 shorturl.at/A2Y3K

Tanzania has 57.25 tcf of natural gas. The $42B LNG project could grow GDP by 2% each year during construction. But will this wealth benefit communities or create extractive enclaves that leave locals behind?

📢 Today marks the final day of the Fourth Session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) on the UN Framework Convention on International Tax Cooperation in New York 🗽.
Over the past few days, 137 Member States 🌍, alongside civil society, participated.
Key issues, including fair allocation of taxing rights ⚖️, taxation of high-net-worth individuals 💰, and universal mutual administrative assistance, remained at the heart of discussions.
The momentum is clear: the world is watching, and the call for equity and justice in global taxation has never been stronger.
The negotiations may be concluding, but the fight for a fair tax system continues.
🗓️ The Fifth Session will take place in New York from 3–14 August 2026.

“We envision that the #UNTaxConvention will, step by step, make DTAs redundant and clearly make the provisions of the Framework Convention and the Protocols implementable for countries that don’t have tax treaties. Perhaps this is one of the shifts triggered by this process that we must start making room for.”
Our Senior Policy Officer, Ms. @EverlynKavenge, making her submission on behalf of the Africa CSOs working group and Tax Justice Network Africa at the Fourth Session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) on the UN Framework Convention on International Tax Cooperation at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

@AFRODAD2011, in partnership with @TIKenya and the @AaccCeta, convened a side session at the Alternative Mining Indaba (AMI) 2026 in Cape Town under the theme “Power to the People: Owning Africa’s Energy Future.” The session addressed governance gaps in Africa’s mineral sector, with a strong focus on beneficial ownership transparency, accountability, and responsible resource stewardship. It aimed to strengthen citizen-centred advocacy and ensure that mineral-driven energy transitions deliver equitable benefits to communities.
The conveners emphasised the need for a unified, people-centred approach aligned with the Africa Mining Vision and continental fiscal justice frameworks, positioning mineral governance as essential to macroeconomic stability, energy sovereignty, and long-term climate resilience. #DebtJustice #AfricaRuleMaker

“Domestic resource mobilisation is not about replacing climate finance, it’s about securing sovereignty. Africa cannot win in a system designed against it, unless we negotiate as one. We must move up the value chain and reclaim power in negotiations to ensure these resources drive transformation at home.”
Day 2 at the #AMI2026, our Policy Officer, Gloria Majiga, speaking at a side session on “Who Owns Africa’s Minerals? Beneficial Ownership, Transparency, and Accountability in the Mining Sector” co-hosted by @AFRODAD2011 and @AaccCeta.

We must never borrow to develop when we can mine and develop! Africa has enough resources to fund it's development, however, IFFs, harmful incentives and profit shifting activities are leaving us in sorry state. I agree with the sentiments coming out of #AMI2026

“Tackling domestic resource mobilisation requires an approach grounded in sovereignty and self-determined development. Africa cannot finance its climate and development priorities on the back of debt and external dependence,”
Our Policy Officer, Gloria Majiga, speaking at #AMI2026 in a session with @ActionAid and @PowerShftAfrica , highlighted the need for equitable and progressive tax systems as essential for mobilising domestic and global capital, reclaiming public resources, and ensuring accountability.
