"I'm not saying that Kris Knobluach is perfect... But give him the opportunity to grow and develop. Jon Cooper didn't have instant success."
The @JasonGregor Show brought to you by Mr. Rooter Plumbing.
@itsWozzz He needs to find a way to be on the right side of the puck more. If he could be the steady force with Bouch that would work. It’s too often he’s digging the puck out from the net. I would trade Ekholm.
Darnell Nurse isn't even that bad of a defenceman; he's just got an anchor of a contract.
We're hard on him because we expect more out of him for how much he makes. He's a great skater, provides physicality, isn't afraid to eat pucks, and can chip in offensively.
@Lowetide Jackson, Bowman, and Knobber are all gone. They’ve done enough damage to warrant the firing. Their best players have no confidence in them to get the job done.
This is an aging team. Also, the heart of the order is not strong defensively. There appears to be no real maturation in attention to detail defensively at the top of this roster.

@dstaples@edmontonjournal All these articles are basically reporting “News flash, water is still wet”. The Connor leaving paranoia has been since April 2015. It’s lead them to take steps up and back many times. Katz really can’t keep JJ and SB after today, Coffey will be PHO and Mac T will be GM. again.
Major take away from the Press Conferences.
McDavid & Draisaitl came across as more committed to drastically improving and winning than Knoblauch & Bowman.
Katz year end management review needs to answer one question:
Is this the GM/Coach that wins a championship next year?
It's still too early to say who the new faces will be on the Oilers next season, however, Stan Bowman believes the team won't have massive changes.
(h/t @JasonGregor)
Knoblauch said there were three or four goals from the Ducks power play off plays that they expected, and were prepared for. Said it’s tough and you don’t always execute properly.
Knoblauch said he feels he could have been more decisive in training camp as far as assigning roles to players and letting things play out right or wrong. Said some of his decision with lines and player usage were also factors.
“Freddy didn’t have a good year. We didn’t help him by where we played him. I’ve seen this before with players in the first year of a long deal. I thought he played better in March. We need him to find it sooner next year, but we also need to put him in a position to have success,” Bowman on Frederic.
The superstar talent on the team says they are heading in the wrong direction.
Is it wise to have Jackson/Bowman, the same two guys at the top who’ve taken them in that direction continue to call the shots?
Common sense would say no.
Oilers PK the past few seasons:
2024 reg. season: 79.5%
2024 playoffs: 94.3%
2025 season: 78.2%
2025 playoffs: 67.1%
2026 season: 77.8%.
2026 playoffs: 50%
Claims the PK was a strength in 2024 is misleading. Got hot for 22 games in 2024 playoffs.
The Oilers were crushed by 3 things: injuries to top players, the NHL’s brutal flattish cap of the COVID era, and management mistakes of the summer of 2024.
But despite what Chicken Little will tell you today, the team’s Stanley Cup window is still open.
I’ll be called delusional but I do feel the Oilers can extend their Cup window if they make the necessary moves this off-season.
In my opinion, that starts by trading Darnell Nurse.
Not every move will pan out but you will need more home runs than anything.
@KevinMcCurdy@lotsryan They’ve made 10 years of move since Connor’s face on lottery night. They’ve tired to speed the process so many times and keep running the car into the ditch.
I'm thinking about a larger post on roster construction, but one very important piece of "food for thought" (which @lotsryan and I have been harping on since the start of the year): To an extent this was always a transition year, the single most important contributors to that were a change of management philosophy from Holland -> Bowman, and $10M in salary increases for Draisaitl and Bouchard (basically same players, with no increase in team capability overall for that money). Were the moves Bowman made perfect? Absolutely not, but the salary cap increase is now here, and if they make smart moves, they have real opportunity to move the needle this summer.
