VOLKSSPELE IS OART THEREOF “Volkspele (literally “folk games” or folk dances) is a South African Afrikaner folk dance tradition that’s roughly 110–112 years old as of 2026. Origin It originated in Boshof, in the Orange Free State (now Free State province), South Africa. The first public performance took place on 22 February 1914 at a Sunday School picnic on the farm Vuisfontein near Boshof. Founder and Why It Started It was the brainchild of Dr. Samuel Henri Pellissier (1887–1978), a teacher, cultural leader, and deputy headmaster at the Afrikaans High School in Boshof.29 While in Europe (accounts vary slightly on exact timing, around 1912–1915), Pellissier was in Sweden learning carpentry. He and a friend noticed young people from other countries practicing their traditional folk songs and dances in national dress — but the South Africans had nothing equivalent. Feeling left out, he decided to create one for Afrikaners. Back home, he adapted/translated four Swedish dances, taught them to his pupils, and debuted them at that 1914 picnic. The idea caught on as a way to build Afrikaner cultural identity and unity, especially after the hardships of the Anglo-Boer War (1899–1902). Organizations like the Reddingsdaadbond helped spread it nationwide through dance groups called laers, mass events (saamtrekke), courses, and tours. Context and Purpose •Cultural revival: Afrikaners (descended from Dutch, Huguenot, and other European settlers) wanted their own “national” traditions, modeled on European folk dances but tied to Voortrekker pioneer heritage. Dancers wear stylized Voortrekker-style “national dress” (long dresses/bonnets for women, shorts/knee socks/waistcoats for men), often with embroidered local flower motifs.6 •It was partly artificial/revivalist (not ancient Boer trek dances), but it became a big part of Afrikaner heritage events, school programs, and festivals.1 •Still practiced today, with junior/senior groups, holidays camps (named after Pellissier and his wife), and international tours. In short: A clever early-20th-century cultural hack by a teacher who saw a gap on a Swedish trip and filled it with Swedish-inspired moves + Afrikaner pride.
