Someone can certainly *make* a billion dollars. That’s not the same thing as earning.
Growing fast and disrupting markets also often means chasing and wielding market power, political influence, and scale.
Take Airbnb. They heavily lobby politicians against passing housing laws to protect working class residents because it’s bad for their business model.
Airbnb could not exist at its current scale and size without the housing market destabilizations, displacements, and exploits that are supercharging the evictions of working people everywhere from Puerto Rico to Jackson Hole.
Now young people are planning for a future where they will never be able to afford to own a home while others have 20 and live off renting it out to them at extortionate rates with zero protections. Yes, a tiny amount of people can make billions of dollars doing that. And millions of everyday Americans are bearing the cost.

When it's disrupted it takes decades to recover and we end up with invasive species like stink net that's taking over AZ & creating an insane fire hazard.

The desert has an ecosystem all its own - & solar farms are destroying it. They are putting them up all over CA's Mojave Desert, bulldozing Ironwood & Joshua trees, & destroying biotic soil crusts (cyanobacteria and lichens) that stabilize the soil. This leads to more dust storms that hinder photosynthesis & harm animal health. The dust can also contain the pathogen responsible for Valley fever in humans. Studies also note declines in biodiversity & disruptions of pollinator networks.

Here's a glimpse into the educational apocalypse: "Sarah, a freshman at Wilfrid Laurier University in Ontario, said she first used ChatGPT to cheat during the spring semester of her final year of high school. After getting acquainted with the chatbot, Sarah used it for all her classes: Indigenous studies, law, English, and a “hippie farming class” called Green Industries. “My grades were amazing,” she said. “It changed my life.” Sarah continued to use AI when she started college this past fall. When you first have a baby it changes your entire life and there’s something about it that feels permanent. I have a baby now- that’s my life.
But it’s not. It’s this incredibly short moment that you’ll never have back. It goes so quickly, you won’t believe it, and you’ll spend the rest of your life thinking about that time.
So, be aware that it’s fleeting. Spend every possible second loving the shit out of them, because at least when you look back at it, you’ll know you did that.
