The Problem with Ethiopia’s “Maritime Imperative”
Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Research and Documentation Division
4 May 2026
*"...The Horn of Africa does not require new doctrines of inevitability. It requires a reaffirmation of the principles that have sustained it thus far: respect for sovereignty, adherence to international law, and a commitment to cooperation based on equality rather than coercion".
*"...The 'maritime imperative' is not an unavoidable consequence of geography or geopolitics. It is a constructed narrative designed to shift the boundaries of what is considered acceptable in regional discourse. It must be recognized for what it is: a revisionist doctrine that seeks to legitimize ambition at the expense of law. And it must be rejected accordingly".

ERITREA’S PATH TO FOOD SECURITY: WATER, LAND, AND SELF-RELIANCE OVER 35 YEARS
Eritrea’s pursuit of food security is shaped by structural constraints that make agriculture inherently difficult.
…Eritrea’s experience highlights a distinct model of food security—one rooted not in scale or external inputs, but in the careful management of fundamental resources.

THE COLLAPSE OF RUBIN’S ERITREA CASE
There is a difference between analysis and habit. Analysis responds to reality as it is; habit repeats what it has always said, regardless of whether the world has changed….Michael Rubin’s latest intervention fits squarely within this pattern.
… His latest piece is not analysis. It is muscle memory. The structure is predictable: begin with hostility, recycle false claims, sidestep inconvenient facts, and conclude, inevitably, that engagement equals defeat.

Delighted to receive at @Eritrea_UN my colleague, H.E. Mr. Giorgio Marrapodi, Permanent Representative of #Italy to the @UN. In these challenging times, exchanging views across the multilateral system is essential to deepen our understanding of global issues and their impact on different regions.
We also discussed #Eritrea-#Italy relations and prospects for enhanced economic engagement. We agreed to work closely @UN in a spirit of cooperation and mutual support and explore avenues to enhance our bilateral ties.

Profile Q & A - The Inseparable Seven: One Family’s Journey Through the Heart of the Liberation Struggle; by Sabrina Solomon
Captivating story of an entire family that joined the liberation struggle in the mid-1970s. The story depicts - in microcosm - the resilience summoned and heavy price paid by #Eritrean families all over the country to ascertain their inviolable national rights and human dignity.
*"... What makes our story particularly poignant is that every single member – including both parents and the siblings – joined the independence struggle in the field. 'The Fate of One Family' represents the destiny of an entire household that joined the liberation struggle during a time of harsh colonial rule. My father joined in 1976, and the rest of us followed a year later in 1977".
*"...Our once inseparable family was virtually disbanded, each member relentlessly dedicated to the fight for independence. I eventually became a tank fighter, operating heavy armor in violent and grueling battles. The journey was extremely painful; I lost many incredible colleagues and friends, including my own brother and sister. It was a relentless struggle, but we never wavered".

The central question should not be why U.S. sanctions on Eritrea might be lifted, but why the unilateral sanctions imposed by the administration of Joe Biden were imposed in the first place.
The administration of Barack Obama used its influence at the UNSC to push unjust and unfair sanctions on #Eritrea in 2009 and again in 2011.
When those UN sanctions were lifted in 2018, during the first administration of @realDonaldTrump , the Biden administration later introduced a new round of unilateral sanctions in 2022.
Consider the grotesque image this presents: one of the richest and most powerful nations in the world (lead by Obama and Biden) suffocating economically a small, poor, and young #African nation for decades.
How such a policy can be justified under any circumstances is mind bendingly inexcusable . At the same time, Eritrea’s endurance under sustained pressure is a confirmation of the country’s resilience—its ability to remain stable, self-reliant, and at peace despite persistent external pressure.
