Some may say "Melliferus, why are you in the @GreenPartyUS? Aren't the Greens a spoiler/not worth it/a wasted vote? Can't you do better pushing one of the major parties leftward? I say no.

Being a socialist in the Democratic Party feels exhausting because it's not just the right we are up against. We are up against our own Party who's resisting change.

Just sent @Jacobin an article rebutting the @DemSocialists' strategy of running a Democrat in 2028, calling CaliDSA out for balking on the Left Unity Slate, what the American left should do instead. Here's hoping they publish it, but if they balk, we'll publish elsewhere!

Beating Donald Trump isn’t enough, argue the Democratic Socialists of America’s cochairs. A united left-labor campaign in 2028 could mobilize millions, challenge Democratic Party failure, and put a working-class program on the national stage. jacobin.com/2026/05/left-l…

@CoolyCooliCoole @LeftyWinter These parties however (like wfp) don’t usually want a national party- they are usually focused on fusion states, and where they refuse to comply with the Dems, they get kicked off the ballot for it (see GPNY vs WFP in NY as one example) Parliamentary or PR would work better.

@melliferus @LeftyWinter I think there's actually a lot of room to expand the party system eg the Working Families Party, so go to it! I'd be in favor of a parliamentary system TBH. The WFP has been able to push Dems to the left to get their endorsement and/or have run their own candidates.

Most of the time I'm on here complaining about centrists but this crap annoys me the most about some factions on the leftist side of the political spectrum. We have a two party system. That's what we are working with. Until that changes, you got to work within the Democratic Party. No matter how annoyed or angry you get. We win some we lose some. Get involved in your primaries, run for office, get involved in your county, city, State Democratic Party. Join groups who ONLY organize for progressive candidates inside the Democratic Party (working families party, DSA, Progressive Democrats of America, resistance groups like indivisible, Swing Left, Move On, etc). Run for your Democratic precinct leadership positions. Support policy related groups lobbying for a specific issue you care about, example March for Our Lives (gun safety) , public citizen (accountable government) , unions, Healthcare-NOW (Medicare for all group), etc. I know how easy it is to want to give up on this Party. I did before but I came right back after I realized I made a mistake when I was younger.

Hasan Piker: “We’re voting for Democrats with a purpose." The purpose of Democrats is to keep us trapped in the duopoly. They serve the same corrupt system as Republicans. To build a better world people must find the courage to abandon the parties that uphold this decaying one.

@CoolyCooliCoole @LeftyWinter To be fair, I think both parties are essentially the same, hence I propose building something different (the Greens). I think some leftists view both parties as a mere ballot line- to which I ask, ok then please run on the Republican ballot line…. But they don’t. Only the Dems

@LeftyWinter I've always thought this type of argument was the left telling on themselves. If both parties are the same, truly, why not run in Republican primaries and debate Republicans? It's because they know the parties aren't the same, but refuse to acknowledge Dems aren't all bad.

@Kaimandante In some cases, this will require cooperation with capitalist legislators to achieve compromise, but it also means organizing outside of halls of power too. An independent political force gives you options to do that.

@Kaimandante Speaking as a socialist Green, Its about building an independent political force to leverage the capitalists in either political party. It's also about trying to increase worker power through our current system while acknowledging the end goal is worker control over the govt.

@xcollinm @SocDoneLeft I would argue DSA democrats are also still democrats. There is no mechanism of control independent of the democratic party. They are also reliant on overall democratic turnout to succeed. Finally, they are reliant on democratic networks too. It forces them to conform.

@melliferus @SocDoneLeft Probably because it doesn’t fundamentally change their nature of their candidacy and politics. Those are just Democrats. DSA Democrats aren’t. But yeah your point is still taken it is being framed as if they appeared differently on the ballot.

are there *any* 2016 era political forces apart from DSA that remained relevant into the second Trump Term? Brand New Congress, Women’s March, March For For Lives, Sunrise, Indivisible all basically vanished.

The Green Party basically exists for the sole purpose of siphoning votes off from Democrats, it's the reason they only really run in federal elections. Doing anything to keep Republicans from attaining power is extremely important especially with their authoritarian aspirations.
