🚨 🚨🚨 Attention must be paid: RIGHTSCON has been shut down because of pressure from CHINA. The billionaire cartel operating formally as “the CCP” was able to cancel a vital, important, impactful conference in the human rights space. The authoritarians who rule China are so desperately afraid of the power of freeedom of speech that they marshaled an entire African government to utterly burn its own credibility in this mess. This cancellation is a tragedy and the Zambian government will be rightfully roasted for this. So much work and effort in furtherance of a cause that benefits all free people. It is abominable and I am so incredibly sorry for the organizers and everyone who worked so hard… it is a terrible loss.

Late last week, the European Union sanctioned some of the most egregious Hong Kong- and Russia-based trading companies exposed in my report with @Chloe_chc_25 of @thecfhk on Hong Kong's role in feeding Western tech to Russia's war machine. Here is CFHK's statement. We're pleased to see the EU acting on our findings, but this is only a first step. For real impact, the EU and its allies must begin sanctioning the banks, logistics companies, and other financial and trade infrastructure enabling this trade, along with the individuals behind them. Without that, it's whack-a-mole: Hong Kong trading companies will always evade faster than sanctions authorities can trace and target them.

My new report with @chloe_chc_25 for @thecfhk tracks hundreds of millions in euros of EU, UK, and Swiss military-grade components routed through Hong Kong to Russia. The key takeaway is systemic failure across the chain: • European governments are failing to align and enforce export controls. • Manufacturers are failing to conduct adequate due diligence and end-use tracing. • Hong Kong and Chinese authorities are failing to shut down transshipment networks operating openly. Prominent Hong Kong urologist and pro-democracy politician Kwok Ka-Ki, who was jailed and recently released after serving a 4-year sentence on national security charges, has just announced that he has been stripped of the right to practice medicine in HK. In his announcement, Dr Kwok mentioned that apart from him, there are teachers who are barred from teaching, social workers who are barred from helping the vulnerable, and lawyers who are barred from practising law. Dr Kwok’s and my being barred from our respective professions as medical doctor and lawyer are not isolated cases. Hong Kong’s national security crackdown is transforming the city’s professions, and not in a good way.
