13 years in AI + Data, and 2023 still took me by surprise. It wasn't just the tech advancements; it was their product experience that mattered. Large language models like GPTs were there for some time, but their true power was hidden.

Alpha School is starting a new high school that gives students their $150k/ year tuition back if they haven't hit $1M in gross profit by graduation. The idea came from students saying an entrepreneurship-focused education would be the best high school experience they could imagine having. @nateliason tells the story: "Nobody really doubts that a sophomore at Stanford can drop out and build a million or billion dollar business. So why can't a 17- or 18-year-old?" "Working back from that, we said, 'You get this incredible network at a place like Stanford of other students who could be your co-founders who you can work with and be motivated by. You get these incredible mentors who come in and talk to you, give you some advice, or just inspire you around what's possible.'" "There's functionally no reason we can't pull that back down to the high school level, especially considering that these kids get like five hours in the afternoon after they've finished their academics." "So that's 4,000 plus hours over four years. And if you just cut out all the things that people usually end up wasting time on, or don't have the resources to figure out, it is eminently doable to get somebody to $1M by the time they graduate high school."

Or Azulay@orslimy

Every B2B software company is (or should be) building a "headless" version of their product. One that can be used by agents. But "headless" doesn't mean "brainless". You don't just wrap your existing APIs into an MCP server and call it a day. The companies that succeed in the agentic era are those that take a thoughtful approach to *designing* an agentic user experience (AUX). Yes, that will likely involve APIs, MCPs and CLIs. But the difference will be in the *ergonomics* of the interface. We need to figure out *how* agents actually want to use our products/platforms. Because if all they wanted to do was use them like humans do, we have "computer use" for that. I'm personally very excited about this new agentic world when it comes to B2B software. HubSpot is all-in on building the #1 agentic customer platform. Just posted this in a private Slack thread with the HubSpot exec team: Being agentic is not just about agents running *on* our platform, it's about agents *running* our platform (being able to operate it). That's how you take AI from being a simple tool to a savvy teammate.

Tinker is cool. If you're a researcher/developer, tinker dramatically simplifies LLM post-training. You retain 90% of algorithmic creative control (usually related to data, loss function, the algorithm) while tinker handles the hard parts that you usually want to touch much less often (infra, forward/backward of the LLM itself, distributed training), meaning you can do these at well below <<10% of typical complexity involved. Compared to the more common and existing paradigm of "upload your data, we'll post-train your LLM", this is imo a more clever place to "slice up" the complexity of post-training, both delegating the heavy lifting, but also keeping majority of the data/algorithmic creative control. I think the community still has to discover how and when finetuning makes sense compared to the (often strong) baseline of prompting a giant model. The early indications I've seen is that finetuning isn't so much about "stylizing" an LLM, instead, it's a lot more about narrowing the scope, and especially when you have a lot of training examples. An extreme example of scope narrowing being that of categorical classifiers, e.g.spam filters, content filters, etc. but it should be broader than that. Instead of building a giant few-shot prompts for a big LLM, it might work a lot better (and faster!) to finetune a smaller LLM specifically for your narrow task. Increasingly, production applications of LLMs are larger pipelines where a bunch of LLMs collaborate in DAGs and flows. Some of these components might work well as prompts. But a lot of it will probably work a lot better as a finetune. Tinker makes the latter trivial and should allow for an easy experimentation of what works best at any stage.

Building a custom LLM puts you in the driver's seat far more than prompting alone. Better performance drives more usage, which creates more training data, which improves performance. That's the data flywheel effect in action.
